Fun to visit the Illinois State Fair this week and catch up with Illinois Department of Agriculture Director and Southern Illinois University Carbondale Saluki alum Jerry Costello! Director Costello and his team do awesome work throughout the year, including hosting both the Illinois State Fair and DuQuoin State Fair. SIU is proud to support the department and our state fairs, including through an important partnership with SIU Medicine, which has operated the fair’s First Aid Station for the past eight years. A special thank you to Dr. Tyler Fulks, Chief of Emergency Medical Services, and the SIU Medicine team on duty — Dr. Cory Jayne, Karen Fraase, Shelly West and Julie Ward for representing SIU and helping keep fairgoers safe.

Before I left the fair, I also had to make my usual visit to the butter cow and enjoy a milkshake with a side of steak and cheese kabobs!

It is always so energizing when the students return to campus for the semester! So many fun events for them - and for me! From Light up the Lake, to the pep rallies, convocation, the White Coat ceremony welcoming the newest class of future doctors, to the unveiling of the Charter Class Donor Wall at the Southern Illinois University Simmons Law School! Special thanks to all of the faculty and staff for planning such a welcoming weekend at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Missed yesterday’s total solar eclipse? Check out the video from an incredible Southern Illinois University Carbondale experience as students, faculty and researchers traveled to Spain to observe and livestream the total solar eclipse. A watch party was also hosted on campus. The SIU team conducted observations of the sun’s corona as part of NASA heliophysics projects and National Science Foundation-funded research which brought together science, education and media for a truly one-of-a-kind learning experience.

We're pleased to welcome Dr. Abigail Eilerman as the new Director of the SIU System Institute for Rural Health! She is no stranger to the SIU System as she was a graduate of the SIUE School of Pharmacy and a faculty member at the SIU School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Eilerman brings extensive clinical, academic and community leadership experience to this important systemwide role. Congratulations!

Last night, we attended a beautiful event and tribute to Dr. Jerry Kruse for his years of service at SIU Medicine held at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum. We've been lucky to have him not only at the school of medicine, but also as a leader throughout the whole SIU System.

What a milestone - we are thankful for all you do!

As a Federally Qualified Health Center, each year SIU Center for Family Medicine participates in National Health Centers Week in August. NHCW is an opportunity to highlight the commitment and passion of Community Health Center patients, staff, board members, and supporters who make it possible to provide quality, comprehensive health care services to millions of patients. Today we would like to celebrate our history as a health center and the communities we serve.

▪SIU Center for Family Medicine became a Federally Qualified Health Center in 2012. Since then we have expanded to cover a large portion of central and southern Illinois.
▪Since 2012 we have served over 2 million patients across all 16 of our sites.
▪We strive to help patients in the 8 rural and urban communities we are located in, but serve dozens of surrounding counties with services such as dental, medical, behavioral health, medications assistance and recovery, geriatrics, express care, integration with local public health departments and so much more.

It was inspiring to listen to the student interns at the Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU School of Medicine Summer Internship Research Presentations and Donor Appreciation Reception. The event celebrates the next generation of cancer researchers and the generous donors whose support makes these opportunities possible. Thank you to those donors and to the faculty mentors who worked with these students. And congratulations to this year's outstanding interns!
