Exciting news today for Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and the SIU System! The $17 million expansion of SIUE’s National Corn-to-Ethanol Research Center will advance research, expand workforce training and create new opportunities for Illinois agriculture. Thank you to everyone who joined us in Springfield this week for the fifth annual SIU Illinois Higher Education Equity Symposium! Together, we explored how education, innovation and collaboration can expand opportunity for students and communities across Illinois.

To those who return year after year, thank you for your continued commitment and the perspectives you bring. To our first-time attendees, we’re grateful you joined the conversation and hope you’ll return!

It was an honor for my wife, Laura, and me to host the second annual Gateway to Growth reception at the SIU Stone Center at Southern Illinois University Carbondale this week. The goals for the event are to support our work with local business and government leaders to enhance economic development in the region. There is still time to register for the FREE SIU Technology and Innovation Expo coming up on Oct. 21 on the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville campus. The event showcases extraordinary innovators and the research capacity across the SIU System featuring a broad cross-disciplinary approach to research in the high-tech space. The expo gives industry partners and potential investors the opportunity to learn about the inventions and products of its top researchers.

What do employers need from the next generation of talent?

That question will take center stage at the SIU 5th Annual Illinois Higher Education Equity Symposium during our Executive Employer Panel. Together, they will explore some of the most important questions facing higher education and employers today: How is AI reshaping the workplace? What skills will graduates need to thrive? How can internships and other career-connected experiences better prepare students? And how should we think differently about pathways from college to career?

This conversation is part of our two-day symposium, Innovating Democracy: The Role of STEAM and Higher Education in Expanding Opportunity, October 8–9 in Springfield. This panel as well as many other amazing presenters will take the stage.
