For many people family is everything. It’s a safe space of support. It’s people you can depend on. It’s a place where you fully get to be yourself and are loved as you are.

For others: it’s not.

We tend to project our idea of what family is onto others. We like to believe everyone has loving parents and siblings. That betrayal, violation, and chronic stress cycles don’t happen.

Many well-meaning people push the narrative that actions of family should be completely overlooked. That we should just get over certain things. That we should betray our own needs.

This runs deep in our collective psyche.

Ok to need boundaries. It’s ok to take you time. It’s ok to prioritize your healing. It’s ok to honor the reality that you can’t put everyone else first as you become exhausted and resentful.
