Okay… NOW the famous melody. 📯🎶

If you know Mahler 1, you know this moment.

That unmistakable low horn melody in the third movement: dark, lyrical, exposed, and definitely not as easy as it sounds. 😅📯

Our SEMO horns got to lean into the sound, the line, and everything Mahler asks for here. 💪🔥

More Mahler memories are on the way as we look back at an incredible performance and ahead to what’s next. 👀🎶🚀

Not the famous melody. We’ll get there. 😉🎶

For now… listen to this. 👀📯

This moment from the third movement of Mahler’s First Symphony is about something else entirely: exposed playing, independence, and trust. 🎼

There’s nowhere to hide in writing like this, and our students played it fearlessly. 🔥

Confident. Musical. Completely committed. 💪🎵

Not “good for a student orchestra.”

Just really good orchestral playing. 👏👏

Looking back at Mahler 1 ⚡️ while we keep moving toward what’s next at SEMO. 🚀🎶

📯 Some exciting news from the SEMO Horn Studio!

We’re proud to share that our horn professor, Dr. Nicholas Kenney, has been appointed Associate Dean of the Holland College of Arts & Media at Southeast Missouri State University.

Dr. Kenney will continue serving as Chair of the Department of Music and Professor of Horn, while taking on this new role supporting students, faculty, and programs across the College.

We’re incredibly proud to see our professor continue to serve SEMO in new ways, and even happier that he’s still right here in the horn studio with us.

Congratulations, Dr. Kenney! 📯❤️🖤

From Mahler to Dvořák — Part III 📯

Mahler: “How are your high B’s?”

Horns: “Yes.” 😏

A little Second Movement cardio from last spring’s Mahler 1.

Great repertoire. Great players. And the chance to tackle the real thing on stage.

Next up: Dvořák 7 at the end of October.

This is what studying music at SEMO looks like.

From Mahler to Dvořák — Part II 📯

Last spring, our horns got to sink their teeth into this.

Mahler doesn’t exactly write background music for the horn section. 😏

Beautiful lines. Big trills. Eight horns. And the kind of orchestral experience that you simply can’t recreate in a practice room.

Now we’re looking ahead to Dvořák 7 at the end of October.

This is what studying music at SEMO looks like.

Last spring: Mahler 1. 🔥📯

This fall: Dvořák 7.

At SEMO, our students don’t just study the great orchestral repertoire—they get to perform it.

Big works. Big moments. Real experience.

We’re flashing back to some of our favorite moments from Mahler’s First Symphony as we count down to Dvořák’s Seventh at the end of October.

And yeah… the horns had a pretty good night. 😏📯

This is what studying music at SEMO looks like.

A huge congratulations to Dyllan Day on an outstanding senior horn recital! Dyllan has given so much to the SEMO Horn Studio and Department of Music as a performer, leader, mentor, and friend. Today was a wonderful celebration of everything she has accomplished and her development was on full display!

We are so proud of you, Dyllan. You absolutely crushed it! 👏📯
