Southeast Missouri Homeschoolers

Southeast Missouri Homeschoolers We are the homeschooling families of the Southeast Missouri and bordering Southern Illinois areas.

We welcome the opportunity to meet other local families with our same passion for homeschooling our children as we support and encourage one another.

Wish this would have been a thing years ago when my kids were little but hoping many homeschoolers can benefit from this now.

In case you missed it: ALL Cape County residents are now eligible for a complimentary CGPL library card, thanks to our partnership with Riverside Regional Library 🎉

If you have an older student that is interested in a great history/civics class this might be something to consider. It’s about an hour long on Tuesday evenings for 12 weeks from a constitutional lawyer offered for free by the Cape area We The People group.

Read and research carefully. FHE is strongly recommending to not do the MoScholar program. You may get some money but you lose your freedoms for it. Not worth it to me!

MoScholar Program

Families for Home Education (FHE) has been alerted that a post card advertisement and/or text messages have been sent out about applying for the MoScholar Program (Missouri Empowerment Scholarship Accounts Program). Many homeschoolers across the state have received this advertisement.

To participate in the program, you will no longer be an autonomous home school. Your home school will be part of the MoScholar program and required to abide by all rules and regulations of the program. It requires standardized testing of your student, home school records reviews, background checks of all adults in the home, etc. (https://treasurer.mo.gov/MOScholars/). This is definitely a sacrifice of freedom for the “money” carrot they are dangling.

The purpose of Families for Home Education is to protect the inalienable right of the parents of Missouri to teach their own children without state regulation and control. This program is a step toward a slippery slope to more regulations on all home schools as they seek to expand the program.

The amendment to remove a home school from the Missouri Empowerment Scholarship Accounts Program failed in the 2022 session when the amendment added to SB 681 was removed in the Conference Committee. There will not be another opportunity to pursue this avenue of protection until the Legislature reconvenes in January 2023.

In the meantime, if you agree with FHE, speak with your state representative and state senator about the need to protect your home school from state regulations and preserve home school freedom. All of the state house districts and all of the even numbered state senate districts are on the ballot. As you meet the candidates for your district you could also speak to them about the need to protect your home school from further state regulations and preserve home school freedom. The relationships and the contacts you make now will help later when you contact your legislators about issues during the legislative session.

This looks like a fun fall field trip idea!!

ATTENTION HOMESCHOOL PARENTS! We are offering a School Field Trip for Homeschoolers this year since more parents are homeschooling due to changes in the way we live lately.

We normally require a 10 person minimum for our School Field Trip rates. However, this year, if you are a Homeschool and you would like to visit us on Fridays - we will offer you our $6.00 per person School Field Trip admission rate. This will also include a bag of animal feed and feedstick for the Parakeet Jungle per person.

We will not be able to offer our Educational Talk for you - however, if we have a larger school here during your visit you are more than welcome to sit in on their Educational Talk at that time.

No reservations required. We are just putting everyone on the honor system that you are a Homeschool Parent. We will be open Fridays from 10 am to 6 pm. Please DO NOT book online for a Homeschool Field Trip as these spots are reserved for our larger schools which meet the minimum requirements for students.

Any questions - please call the Zoo Office at 573-243-7862 or email us at [email protected] Happy Homeschooling!

PS - We have a lot of educational signage and staff will be more than happy to answer any questions your students have during your visit so you can count this as an educational field trip!
