Since the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed the first case of New World screwworm (NWS) in the United States on June 3, pet owners and shelters alike have expressed concern about what this might mean for their animals.

While the larvae of the parasitic fly infest wounds and can create significant tissue damage if left untreated, veterinarians are encouraging shelters and pet owners, including those who work with colonies of stray or other unowned animals, to remain vigilant and stay informed, especially because NWS infestations can be easily prevented and treated.

Earlier this year, Dr. Paul Morley moderated a panel featuring three leading experts in immunology and cattle production to discuss why bovine respiratory disease (BRD) remains a major challenge despite widespread vaccination.

With more questions than time allowed during the live event, panelists Dr. John Ellis, Dr. Amelia Woolums and Dr. John Richeson returned to address several audience questions and share additional insights on BRD, vaccination and cattle health.

Three leading experts in immunology and cattle production recently visited the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences' Veterinary Education, Research & Outreach campus in Canyon, Texas, to explore one of the most persistent challenges in cattle health —bovine respiratory disease (BRD).

Hosted by the VERO research program, the March 24 panel discussion — titled “BRD: If Everyone Vaccinates, Why Is It Still A Problem?” — featured Dr. John Ellis of the University of Saskatchewan; Dr. Amelia Woolums of Mississippi State University; and Dr. John Richeson of West Texas A&M University and was moderated by Dr. Paul Morley, professor and director of research for the VERO program.

Together, they offered complementary perspectives on vaccine development, field application, and the biological complexity of BRD to explore why the disease remains a leading cause of illness, antimicrobial treatment, and death across cattle populations in North American despite widespread vaccination.

As spring comes to a close, we look back on the invaluable hands-on training provided through a special exotics laboratory, where participants practiced appropriate handling techniques and physical examinations on healthy ferrets, lizards, snakes and more under the guidance of Drs. Becky Eschmann and Sharman Hoppes.
