Extension work today required visiting the Intro to Entomology book to help a local pest control company identify a winged psocid or booklouse found in a structure. Accurate identification allows them to develop a successful plan of action.

Escambia Horticulture worked with a local pest control company to solve some small branch dieback on a Laurel oak. The homeowner sent good pictures and we saw the entrance hole of the Black twig borer beetle. The beetle tunneling causes pencil-sized branches to die. You can prune out the branches below the entrance hole if you can reach them. Large trees will still form new growth behind the damaged area.

Make welcome our newest member to the UF IFAS Escambia County Extension Team.

Nestor Cordero is originally from the Mississippi Delta, where he was born and raised around row crop agriculture. Growing up working on a row-crop farm, Nestor gained hands-on experience with irrigation, operating tractors and farm equipment, and many of the day-to-day challenges involved in crop production. Those experiences ultimately shaped his interest in agronomy and w**d management.

As the new Agriculture Extension Agent for Escambia County, Nestor is excited to bring his agriculture and w**d science background into Extension while continuing to learn the agricultural systems of Northwest Florida. He looks forward to building relationships with local growers, working alongside UF/IFAS specialists and community partners, and providing practical, research-based information that supports agriculture throughout Escambia County.
