At Fox & Fionn's Forest, children spend their days immersed in nature through play-based, child-led learning in a small, welcoming community.

Nature Crowns 👑

A festive summer activity!

We made nature crowns using felt, twine, clear packing tape, and fresh flowers. It's a simple invitation to create that children—and adults—love.

How to make them:
🌿 Cut strips of felt to fit each child's head.
🌼 Attach clear packing tape (roll in small bits).
✂️ Punch holes at each end and tie with twine.
💐 Gather flowers, leaves, grasses, or petals, then press them onto the tape to decorate.

For younger children, prepare the crowns ahead of time. Older children often enjoy helping measure, cut, and assemble them.

💛 Tip: Check the floral section at Kroger for heavily discounted bouquets—they're perfect for activities like this!

These simple moments build creativity, fine motor skills, confidence, and a connection with the natural world—all while feeling like play.

They also make a beautiful way to celebrate forest birthdays! 🎂

Forest cat!

“Hi, I’m Mercurius! This week I decided to be a forest school cat! I’m really the goodest boy, I just can’t stop chattering for a good photo!”

We had a lovely Forest School day Friday with two amazing families visiting! And our forest cat spent the entire morning with us. He purred non-stop, bathed in the sun, lazed in the shade, and curled up for a nap in the tire snake. Everyone loved petting him!

Named after the Roman god of communication (Mercurius/Mercury - Hermes in Greek), he’s a talker for sure! He’s happy to be called Blue Cat… or really anything that earns him some love.

*Fun fact: He was a rescue, but he’s a special breed called a Russian Blue. Russian Blue cats are one of the most commonly recommended breeds for allergy sufferers because they tend to shed less, produce less oil on their skin, and may naturally produce lower levels of Fel d 1, the protein responsible for most cat-related allergic reactions.

Fun outdoor craft!

Secret drawings magically appear - Uses 5 ingredients you most likely have at home.

We did this at Forest School this week and the children loved it. Seeing their faces light up was the highlight of the day 🙂

At first glance, it looks like they're painting on a blank sheet of paper.

But before we began, we drew with a white crayon. The lines were almost invisible—just waiting to be discovered.

As the watercolor spread across the page, hidden spirals, sunshine rays, and patterns slowly appeared. Every brushstroke revealed something exciting!

How to recreate the magic at home:

Gather:
🗒️ White paper
🤍 White crayon
🎨 Watercolor paints
🖌️ Brush
💧 Water

Draw first with the white crayon, then paint over the entire page with watercolors and watch the hidden design emerge.

For younger children - feel free to do the crayon drawings yourself or let them just do scribbles.

We chose a simple spiral and sun design, but children can create leaves, spider webs, flowers, animal tracks, or their own secret drawings.

It’s called watercolor resist painting. Shout out to Claire Keller for this super fun activity idea!

Mud Kitchen Moments 🥘

A handful of flowers.

A scoop of red clay.
Some melting ice.
A few seed pods and sticks.

No instructions.
No worksheets.
No "right way."

Just imagination, experimentation, collaboration, and hours of meaningful play.

What looks like children making "mud soup" is actually problem-solving, sensory exploration, creativity, language development, and social learning all woven together.

This is the kind of learning that sticks.

How we keep cool, have fun, learn & stay outside in summer!

Ice in the forest: This week we explored the amazing world of ice through hands-on play and science! The children investigated colorful ice cubes, discovered treasures frozen inside, experimented with salt to melt ice faster, and watched how ice changes as it melts.

Along the way, we talked about:
🧊 Ice is frozen water
🧊 Ice floats because it's less dense than water
🧊 Salt helps ice melt
🧊 Ice can trap leaves, flowers, and other natural treasures
🧊 Ice changes shape as it melts and refreezes

The children used brushes, droppers, and their curiosity to make observations, test ideas, and create colorful icy discoveries. Learning through play is always the coolest! 💙❄️

One of my favorite things about forest school is watching simple materials become invitations for wonder, creativity, problem-solving, and connection.

*Pro tip: For outdoor A/C - use an open ice cooler and a fan placed in front! (This fan is child-safe.)
