On Tuesday, September 29th, The Rotary Club of Troy conducted their annual fall visit to Canton Elementary School to hand out dictionaries to the 3rd grade students. Every third grade student was given a large 500+ page student dictionary courtesy of The Rotary Club of Troy’s collaboration with The Dictionary Project out of Coronado, California.
For over 20 years Troy Rotary has donated over 3,000 dictionaries to Troy, Canton, a small private school, and shared extra copies with home schoolers. “The Rotary Club of Troy along with many other service clubs across our nation believe that “learning to read is a major factor in making our nation and her citizens great”. -Gary Zuber Troy Rotary
“Reading helps us, young and old, to develop the skill of critical thinking. While some folks say that a printed dictionary is a tool of the past especially with today’s technology, we see excitement and joy in the students who receive a dictionary of their very own. The gift of owning a printed dictionary is like a time capsule of human thinking – knowledge, communication, understanding and independence. It gives them the ability to discover and decide for themselves what words (vocabulary) they can use to best express themselves.” -Gary Zuber, Troy Rotary
On behalf of the 3rd Grade Class, I would like to thank The Rotary Club of Troy for their dedication in ensuring the education of our students. -Joe Hollett 3rd Grade Teacher Canton Elementary.
