Every reader starts in a language.

Literacy begins with language. When people learn to read and write in a language they already speak and understand, they have a stronger foundation for learning, communicating, and participating in everyday life.

In multilingual communities, literacy often means navigating more than one language at school, at work, when completing government forms, and in daily life.

But literacy is also about voice and identity. It gives communities the opportunity to record and share their own stories, histories, traditions, and knowledge—including in minority and Indigenous languages. 🌎📖

This International Literacy Day, let’s celebrate language's power to open doors, strengthen communities, and ensure every voice can be heard.

El Khoury delivered a talk on Teaching the Language AI Gets Wrong: Arabic as a Case Study

Gisele El Khoury, Director of the Language Resource Center, delivered a talk titled “Teaching the Language AI Gets Wrong: Arabic as a Case Study for ELT” at an international webinar on AI and the future of English language teaching on August 24, 2026. The webinar, organized by Seshadripuram Evening College and Bengaluru City University's Platform of English Teachers (BCU POET), brought together educators from around the world.

Drawing on her legal background, research on AI and legal translation, and experience as an Arabic instructor, El Khoury highlighted where AI translation tools often fail, not in basic vocabulary or grammar, but in culturally embedded meanings, proverbs, legal terminology, and nuances of obligation and permission.

Rather than banning or blindly trusting AI, she advocated teaching students to recognize where and why AI fails and how to correct it. Her key message was that fluent-sounding translations can still be wrong, making critical evaluation an essential skill for language learning in an AI-driven world.

Robin Rhodes was recently invited to speak at a U.S. Embassy event titled Innovating Together: The U.S.-Rwanda Talent Technology Forum on May 6, 2026, in Kigali, Rwanda. Rhodes is currently in Rwanda on a Fulbright U.S. Scholar award and has spent the last nine months conducting research and teaching in the country. She shared some of her recent research results and noted how educational technologists can benefit from teacher resiliency in the country.

The Arabic Club wrapped up the semester with a warm and joyful celebration filled with delicious food, lively conversations, and games.

As part of this event, we recognized our graduating seniors and students who completed the Arabic minor. Congratulations to Sam Weber and Hope Ninmann for their accomplishments and commitment to the Arabic language and culture! Your hard work and enthusiasm have been an important part of the club, and you will be greatly missed.

We wish all our graduating students the very best in their next chapter and look forward to welcoming everyone back next semester for more events, learning, and connection.

St. Lawrence University Students Explore Language and Culture in Montreal Field Trip

Students from Arabic and French classes at St. Lawrence University recently traveled to Montreal for an immersive cultural and linguistic experience that brought classroom learning to life.

The day began with a shared lunch at Andalos Lebanese Cuisine, where students explored authentic Middle Eastern cuisine while connecting their Arabic language studies to real-world cultural experiences. The group then traveled to Old Montreal, visiting the iconic Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal. The basilica’s breathtaking architecture and historical significance offered students insight into French-Canadian heritage and the enduring influence of the French language in the region.

Students continued their visit with a walk through Place Jacques-Cartier, a lively public square filled with street performers, cafés, and historic charm, an ideal setting for informal language practice and cultural immersion. The trip concluded with a stop at Crêperie St. Paul, where students enjoyed traditional French crêpes before strolling along the scenic Old Port.

The organizers extend their sincere thanks to the Center for International and Intercultural Studies (CIIS) for their generous support. This trip was made possible in part through a short-term travel grant that enabled students to participate in this enriching international experience.
