🎓 Preparing Our Students for Life Beyond Graduation!

The students of the Canton Public School District High School Equivalency Program (HSEP) enjoyed an exciting and informative visit to Nissan in Canton!

At HSEP, our responsibility extends beyond helping students earn their high school equivalency credential. We are committed to ensuring that every student understands that graduation is not the finish line—it is the beginning of their next chapter.

We encourage our students to focus on the Three E’s to Success:

💼 ENTER into the workforce
🎓 ENROLL in a community college or university
🇺🇸 ENLIST in a branch of the United States military

Experiences like our visit to Nissan allow students to see firsthand the career opportunities available right here in their community while encouraging them to begin thinking seriously about their futures.

We are pleased to announce that the Canton Public School Board of Trustees has appointed Dr. Bonita R. Coleman as the Canton Public School District's new interim superintendent. Dr. Coleman is an accomplished educational executive with more than three decades of experience leading complex K–12 systems at the local, state, and national levels. A former superintendent, deputy superintendent, state education executive, teacher, university professor, and executive coach, she brings a rare combination of instructional expertise, operational leadership, strategic ex*****on, and organizational change management to school district leadership.

Dr. Coleman served for ten years as Superintendent of the Ocean Springs School District in Mississippi, where she led a high-performing school system serving approximately 5,700 students. Under her leadership, the district consistently maintained an A accountability rating beginning in 2013, and all district schools maintained A ratings beginning in 2018–2019. Ocean Springs also ranked as the top district in Mississippi for student proficiency and advanced performance on the Mississippi Academic Assessment Program.

Her superintendent tenure was characterized by a disciplined focus on student achievement, leadership development, organizational effectiveness, fiscal stewardship, safety, and continuous improvement.

Dr. Coleman earned her Ph.D. from Jackson State University, a master's degree from the University of Mississippi, and a bachelor's degree from Tougaloo College. She also completed a post-doctoral fellowship through the Broad Superintendents Academy.

We are confident that her guidance will encourage and support both staff and students during this significant transition. “It is an honor to be selected to serve the students and families of Canton Public School District. I look forward to working with leaders and teachers to continue to assess Canton Public Schools' organizational needs and maintain a strong focus on teaching and learning and operational efficiency,” said Dr. Coleman.

FROM GED GRADUATE TO ENTREPRENEUR:

The Canton Public School District High School Equivalency Program (HSEP) was honored to welcome Mr. DeCedric Harvey, a proud native of Canton, Mississippi, who now resides in Irving, Texas, and is the owner of I-55 Trucking Company.

Mr. Harvey’s visit was especially meaningful because he is not only a successful entrepreneur—he is also a GED graduate. His story served as a powerful reminder to our students that your starting point does not have to determine your destination.

During his visit, Mr. Harvey openly shared his journey, the challenges he encountered along the way, and the determination it took to reach his goals. He encouraged our students to believe in themselves, take advantage of the opportunities before them, and always strive to do their best.

His message was encouraging, inspiring, and authentic, and our students were highly receptive. It was evident that hearing from someone who has walked a similar path made his words especially impactful.

We are grateful to Mr. Harvey for taking the time to return to his hometown and invest in the lives of our students. Representation matters, and sometimes the most powerful motivation comes from someone who has been where you are and can show you where you can go.

We are also proud to share that Mr. Harvey is the father of Ms. Da’Meeria Harvey, our HSEP Math and Science Instructor. We appreciate the continued support of families who believe in the mission of HSEP and are willing to pour back into the community.

From Delayed to Determined

Delayed definitely does not mean denied!

One of the many strengths of the Canton Public School District High School Equivalency Program is that it allows students to work at their own pace while providing them with the support, flexibility, and opportunities they need to pursue academic success.

Jerkavion McCoy enrolled in the HSEP last year and came within one test of graduating with his cohort. But he did not give up. With the unwavering support of his family, Jerkavion returned this year with a purpose, a plan, and a determination to finish what he started.

Today, he proved that giving up is never an option!

It is with tremendous pride and excitement that we present Mr. Jerkavion McCoy as the 24th graduate of the Canton Public School District High School Equivalency Program! 🎓💙💛

Jerkavion, your journey is a powerful reminder that setbacks do not define us—perseverance does. Your determination, resilience, and commitment to your goal have paid off.
