The Property Tax Puzzle: What Educators Need To Know
Session Date: Monday, May 11, 2026 6:00–7:30 PM
https://www.ohea.org/one-beyond-the-classroom/
Session Host: Rebecah Jones, OEA Collective Bargaining and Research Consultant
Ohio funds nearly half of its public schools through property taxes, making homeowners central to sustaining education and other public services. After two decades of tax changes that favored businesses over homeowners—and new school funding rules enacted in 2025—property taxes have become increasingly controversial. With a proposed ballot initiative that would eliminate property taxes altogether, understanding how Ohio’s property tax system works and how to protect public services is more urgent than ever. This 45‑minute session explains the history and recent changes to school funding, outlines emerging threats, and equips participants with practical tools to discuss and defend property tax–funded public services in their communities.
