You don’t need to be in shape to start karate, karate gets you in shape, physically and mentally. What matters most is having the courage to walk through the door. 🚪🥋

Karate is a martial art and combat sport that originated in the Ryukyu Kingdom, which is now Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. It developed from a combination of the indigenous Ryukyuan martial arts (known as te or tī) and Chinese martial arts. Initially, it was called kara-te (唐手), meaning "Chinese hand," but the name was later changed to karate (空手), meaning "empty hand," emphasizing the absence of weapons and the focus on self-mastery. The full name, karatedō (空手道), translates to "the way of the empty hand" and emphasizes karate as a holistic discipline that goes beyond just fighting techniques. A karate practitioner is known as a karateka.
Karate training is generally divided into three main components:
Kihon (basics or fundamentals): This involves practicing various stances, strikes, blocks, kicks, and movements to build a strong foundation and make techniques instinctive.
Kata (forms): These are formalized sequences of movements that represent offensive and defensive postures based on idealized combat applications. They help develop coordination, balance, agility, strength, and speed.
Kumite (sparring): This is where techniques and principles learned in kihon and kata are applied against an opponent. Levels of physical contact vary significantly across different styles and settings, ranging from light contact to full contact.
