The CDC recently released new data on overdose deaths in 2024. Estimates show that approximately 79,000 people died of drug overdoses in 2024, declining by over 26% from 2023 – the largest one year drop ever recorded.

Continued access to naloxone and treatment, shifts in the drug supply, and increased prevention all contribute to this decline. While this drop in overdose deaths provides hope, we know there is still work to do to sustain that progress.
