🎥 2. Where’s the Fiber?

Hi, ladies, it’s Coach Phyllis; let’s build strength, energy, and confidence one step at a time.

Here’s something I want you to check on your next food label:

FIBER!

A package might say “whole grain,” “multigrain,” or even “made with whole grains”—but how much fiber are you actually getting?

Fiber helps with fullness, digestion, and overall health, and many of us aren’t getting enough.

So don’t let those pretty words on the front make the decision for you.

Turn it over and investigate! 🔎

Question: When was the last time you checked the fiber on a food label?

Remember: small choices add up. Choose better, build better, become better. See you next time!https://hgic.clemson.edu/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/word-image-1.png

🍯Beyond the Label: Hidden sugars

Sugar doesn't always go by the name "sugar". It can hide behind names like cane syrup, brown rice, syrup, dextrose, fructose, maltose, and many others. The more names you recognize, the easier it becomes to make informed choices.

💬 Curiosity Question:

Have you ever found a hidden sugar in a food you thought was healthy?

👀 Today's Challenge: Pick one packaged food in your pantry and see how many forms of added sugar you can find on the ingredient list!

📏Beyond Label:Serving Size tricks
Did you know the nutrition label doesn't always reflect the WHOLE PACKAGE? a bag of potato chips, a bottle drink, or even a small snack may contain 2-3 servings. That means the calories, sugar, and sodium can add up quickly if you eat the entire package.

💬 Curiosity Question:
How often do you check the serving size before looking at the calories?

👀 Today's challenge: Before you eat a package snack, look at the serving size 1st. You might be surprised at what you discover.

The ingredients are much more important than the nutrition label. !

The shorter the ingredient list, the better... most of the time. You don't have to memorize every ingredient or become a nutrition expert. Just start asking one simple question: "Does this look like food my grandmother would recognize?" If the ingredient list is mostly foods you know—great! If it's packed with artificial colors, sweeteners, preservatives, and words you can't pronounce, it might be a sign to look for a better option. Remember, healthy eating isn't about perfection; it's about making one better choice at a time.

💬 Question for You:
What's one packaged food you buy regularly that you'd like to take a closer look at the next time you're at the store?

💚 Small changes. Smart choices. Stronger health.

Don't let the numbers distract you from the ingredients. It's easy to focus on calories, carbs, or fat, but have you ever looked at the ingredient list first? Two foods can have the same number of calories and nourish your body very differently. Think of it this way:
🍎 An apple doesn't come with an ingredient list.
📦 Many packaged foods have ingredients you can't pronounce.

The closer your food is to the way God created it, the more likely it is to nourish your body.

💬 Curiosity Question:
When you grocery shop, what's the FIRST thing you look at: the calories, the nutrition facts, or the ingredient list?

Healthy according to whom?

Your body doesn't know it's "healthy" just because the package says it is. Many foods marketed as healthy can still be loaded with added sugars, refined ingredients, or very little nutrition. The next time you're shopping, flip the package over and read the ingredients, not just a front label.
What's one food you thought was healthy until you looked at the label? Marketing sells products; ingredients tell the truth.
