Six people might be too many for tiny lab but we’re keeping the peace. Syan, Elle and Claire are testing four derivatives of proflavine for possible anticancer applications. Our main methods are fluorescence titration, Van’t Hoff analysis, viscosity and melting points.

Summer research is in full swing Chase and Owen are making self immolating polymers for degradable plastics with Dr. Lutz; Elle and Peter are using electrochemistry to study dye degradation and battery technology with Dr. Oldacre; and with Dr. Glazier, Ana and Aurora are using carbon dots to detect environmental contaminants and Syan, Elle and Claire are studying the DNA binding of novel proflavine derivatives that could inform future antibiotic or anticancer drugs. New to St. Lawrence - a circular dichroism spectrometer- a generous gift from the chemistry department at Hamilton College. Elle Waite and Dr. Glazier set it up today and collected the first spectrum of DNA. O we start running samples to study how proflavine derivatives made in Dr. Tartakoff’s lab bind to DNA.

Our new infrared spectrometer arrived!! Ana is the first user, also her first IR spectrum. Go Ana! Sample preparation was an adventure because she needed to make a glass pellet for the IR using high pressure die method. The goal today was to characterize the carbon dots she made to hopefully detect microplastics like those getting into the environment and our bodies from plastic bottles (PET).

Aurora left a reaction to make polystyrene particles overnight and arrived in the morning to find a product that looked like milk 🥛 For her project, she is making quantum carbon dots to detect small amounts of the antibiotic tetracycline in milk - comparing milk form Spain and the US, which have different regulations for giving antibiotics to dairy cows.
