The Canton Local School District has a renewal levy, Issue 1, on the ballot. This is not a new tax and would not raise taxes.

Over the past several weeks, many of us have learned that non-public discussions have been taking place regarding the formation of a new athletic conference made up of schools from across our region. A vote by the schools planning to officially join is scheduled for this Friday, which will determine more definitively who will be joining officially.

In the images attached to this post, each of the schools who at some point participated in these discussions are included. Canton Local is included on the charts and maps in order to aid comparison of our district with those invited to the table.

However, Canton Local was never approached or included in any previous discussions about the new league. What makes this even more alarming is the fact that no explanation was provided by administrators in these districts when our administrators simply asked "why not" when they were alerted to these discussions going on behind closed doors?

As a proud member of this community, a member of our school board, a former teacher in this district, and the parent of three Canton South graduates, I find that deeply disappointing.

Athletics are about more than competition. They build relationships between communities. They create opportunities for our students. They shape school identity.

To see our district excluded from discussions that included nearly all surrounding schools — without transparency — raises questions.

Looking at the geographic data included here, Canton South is centrally located among many of the schools that were invited. Travel distance does not appear to be a logical barrier.

Enrollment comparisons and competitive alignment - which specifically uses the OHSAA's own formula for assigning divisions in major sports - would also suggest that at minimum, a conversation should have occurred.

If there were legitimate reasons for our exclusion, those reasons should be shared openly. When decisions are made quietly and one community is left out, people begin to wonder why. Our families deserve clarity. Our student-athletes deserve inclusion. Our community deserves respect.

This is not about confrontation. It is about transparency and fairness. It is about bringing to light conversations that are had in the dark.

Canton South has a proud history, strong programs, and a community that supports its students wholeheartedly. We should not be an afterthought in conversations that shape the future of athletics in our region.

I hope that those leading these discussions will reconsider the importance of inclusion — and provide honest answers.
Our students are watching. Our community is listening.

North Industry Christian Church
The church pantry can provide food resources for families. Please call 📞 330-484-2061 to make arrangements.

Peace Lutheran Church
Peace Lutheran can help with emergency food needs. Please call 📞 330-484-4400 to make arrangements. Food resources will also be available at Peace Lutheran on Wednesday, February 4, from 9:30–11:00 a.m. Individuals can stop by the church during that time. Please use the north rear entrance and ring the doorbell.
