This is in Pennsylvania but make no mistake. It will become more difficult nationwide to educate your children at home or outside of the traditional classroom. The powers that be do not want to let go of the funding and control that comes with teaching your children. Even though they are not teaching them. Pay attention folks.

Did you know that students who aren’t likely to pass the STAAR or respective state assessment are not a priority in the classroom? Yup. It’s true. Teachers are in data meetings before school starts identifying who is going to help scores and who will hurt scores. This means if your child is not on track to pass in the spring, he or she is not a priority to the district or campus. This is also true of advanced students. Advanced students are going to pass. No need to worry about them is the thought. As a parent, you must advocate for your child ALL YEAR LONG especially if he or she is not likely to pass the state assessment. Otherwise, your child will remain an academic casualty.

Less than 2 out of 10 black students reads proficiently in America’s public schools. Hispanic students are roughly 2 out of 10. Students with disabilities are about one out of 10. That is outrageous given the dire social, emotional and economic consequences of illiteracy in adulthood. This fall the benches will be filled with illiterate ball players and their parents will be screaming and cheering from the bleachers. These state of the art stadiums give no indication of the struggle that awaits these ball players when the lights go out. Even if a handful of kids make it to the big leagues, they are still in trouble if they can’t read their contracts. These students are being used with their parents permission. But it will be the parents and students who are stuck with the failure long after these kids leave school. Photo credit: Sports Illustrated

Admins bully, teachers bully, students bully, parents bully. Schools cultivate and encourage bullying systemwide by failing to stop the abuse. For those being abused, the environment can be unbearable. Even life threatening. No report of bullying should be ignored, especially when children are involved. Parents protect your children. Don’t depend on the school to do it because very often they won’t. Adults, make a decision to protect yourself from bullies. You cannot change the systems approach to the problem, but you can determine to be part of the solution. Understand that standing up for yourself often comes at a high cost. You must decide ahead of time how much you’re willing to pay. No one should be abused in the school setting.

State standards might suggest they are too young to master maps of the US and the world, but are they? Let’s see what happens when we step back and let them learn.

You are gambling with your child's future.

Look at these numbers. Statistically, your child cannot read proficiently. These are the system's own statistics. This is the measure they choose to rate their ability to teach children how to read, write and spell. They boldly show the world they aren't teaching children how to read. Yet, parents surrender their children to failure daily. Your child will not learn how to read miraculously. Your child will statistically never learn how to read in a public school.

A simple science concept that can be mastered in minutes. If it takes longer, that’s fine too. Not a lot of writing, not a lot of reading, and an opportunity to color, cut, and paste. Manipulative help visualize the concept. YouTube has a ton of videos as well. Individualized learning is a beautiful thing.

Super simple lesson on the science concept of life cycles. Here we discussed a plant. Not a lot of writing. A few manipulatives to use as visuals and the opportunity to color as well. An art and science grade at the same time. Most important, a mastered concept. So much winning.
