Surpass the Ordinary Tom shares his love for the craft through hands-on classes in his New Hampshire shop as well as through instructional videos posted online.

During his three-plus year apprenticeship with Master craftsman Preston "Pug" Moore of North Carolina, nearly 30 years ago, Tom McLaughlin experienced something he is now passing on to others who have an interest in woodworking. In addition, he has the privilege of hosting Rough Cut with Fine Woodworking on PBS. Check your local listing for when the show airs in your community. There’s something that happens when you slow your mind down enough to focus on one tangible thing and allow yourself to become immersed in a project that takes time and doesn’t allow for immediate gratification or results…

It’s oddly comforting to fully face the impermanence and fragility of things. You quickly remember how it feels to create something imperfectly that you can’t undo with the touch of a few keys.

I love working with wood specifically because it puts me back in touch with raw, natural material. It forces me to pace myself, see the beauty of things differently, and create something that truly is one of a kind.

And now, more than ever, we need more things in the world with a human fingerprint.

You are in for a treat tonight as we welcome a special guest, Doug Dimes from the famous DR Dimes Furniture family. I have always admired the exquisitely fine finish Doug achieves with curly maple, and tonight he will generously share with us the his “secret recipe” and process. Together we will demonstrate for you, step by step, how to reproduce this gorgeous finish for yourself. And we will have a live studio audience in the shop as well. It will be a fun and informative time, don’t miss out!

SHOP NIGHT LIVE TONIGHT! - Router secrets for cutting mind-bending Bridle Joints - I enjoy the challenge of laying out complex joinery and cutting by hand. But sometimes a power tool like the router can expand your efficiency and accuracy, especially when tackling complicated joinery…like cutting a bridle joint into a curved rail. Tonight I’ll show you a surprisingly simple technique for “un-bending your mind” and using a router in new and creative ways. We’ll cut and fit a bridle joint into a curved rail in no time flat with no sweat…but maybe a little mind-bending. Hope you can join me in the shop!
