This week at 719!

Coach Tom will be taking a much needed break. Coach Josh will be stepping in to cover classes! Women's class on Wednesday will also be cancelled.

Also, everyone make sure to wish our competitors good luck! Jiujitsu Con 2026 will be going on and several of our athletes will be heading down to test themselves against the best.

📖 Everybody open up your textbooks because it's time for a jiujitsu history lesson! 📖

Once a week, we're going to be turning back the calenders to take a peek into the history of martial arts and jiujitsu competitors.

This week, we're starting off pretty basic. Where did Brazilian Jiujitsu even start?

It's largely accepted that BJJ as we know it today was founded and spread across the world by the Gracie family, specifically Carlos, Oswaldo, Gastão Jr. and Helio Gracie around 1925.

But the first public demonstration of jiu-jitsu in Brazil was actually recorded in 1906 in the city of Manaus.

That's all for now! Next week we'll be looking at where the Gracie family learned their technique and jiujitsus origin in Kodokan Judo!

💪Coach Spotlight💪

All of us at 719 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu truly believe we have some of the best students and community around! But sometimes the coaches need a little bit of love too!

From Coach Josh: If you've met our Head Coach and Owner of 719 then you know that our school is a labor of love. Aside from his love of leg locks, Andrew's biggest attribute is his heart of gold. His passion is helping everyone better themselves and become the absolute best they can be. As a Canon City local, he loves the opportunity to invest and give back to his community.

🥋 Why did you start training?
I started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu because my wife was already a black belt in karate. We wanted to try something new together but after my first class, I was addicted!

🔹What advice would you give to someone who’s interested in trying BJJ?
The best piece of advice I could give is to just show up and be ready to learn! Do not come in with an ego. Do not come in thinking you're an expert because you watch the UFC. This is gonna be something that might be brand new to you and you probably won't be immediately good at it. But that's the beauty of it!

🔹What do you like most about being at 719?
What I like most about 719 is that it’s a small school. But by being a small school, I think we have more of a tight knit community. I love the fact that you make friends with people that you never would have met under any other circumstances. You develop a relationship with these individuals and they become like brothers and sisters. People that you know you can call any time of the day and they will help you out.

There’s nothing better than seeing a packed room, full of people putting in work, pushing each other, and getting better.

20 students on the mat tonight! All different skill levels, all chasing the same thing: improvement.
