Meet Beatrice Nathan, one of the three women behind Mother Tree Permaculture.

Beatrice is a gardener, educator, mother, and founder of Grow & Harvest, where she helps new gardeners turn their yards into productive urban food forests. She holds a Master’s in Sustainability Studies from Lenoir Rhyne University and is permaculture certified through Wild Abundance.

Beatrice is a talented writer, gardener, and entrepreneur. She is also the friend and teacher who shows up early, stays late, and notices all the small things that make you feel seen and supported. She believes in working hard but also smart!, in observation as a sacred practice, and how our daily commitments add up a sustainable future- which is within reach. She’s like if Hope was a daily tincture.

We are so lucky she is part of Mother Tree, and so excited you get to learn and be inspired by her this fall.

Meet Bevelyn Afor Ukah, one of the three women behind Mother Tree Permaculture.

Bevelyn is a consultant, facilitator, and artist whose work explores how humans connect across cultures. She brings deep ecology and equity to everything she touches, and she’s spent over a decade organizing food systems practitioners across the country.

She’s the founding consultant of AFI Oak Consulting, Co-Director of the Collective on Racial Equity in the Food System, and a co-creator of permaculture spaces built for and with BIPOC communities. She holds a Master’s in Intercultural Service, Leadership, and Management, and a Bachelor’s in International Studies, Sociology, and Anthropology.

At Mother Tree, Bevelyn brings the equity and accountability practices that keep our work in alignment with our values.

We’re so glad she’s here, and so glad you get to learn from her this fall.

Meet Laura Ruby, one of the three women behind Mother Tree Permaculture.

Laura has practiced permaculture for over two decades. She received her certification in 2001 at Crystal Waters Ecovillage in Australia, holds a Master’s in Sustainable Business Administration from Green Mountain College, and co-founded the Wild Abundance permaculture course in 2014.

Laura brings expertise in working farms and lands, with decades of practice applying permaculture concepts. In 2022, she founded Ruby Ranch, the 20-acre permaculture horse ranch in the Blue Ridge mountains where Mother Tree’s PDC is held. She runs Ruby Rose Landscape Design and co-manages a 50 acre permaculture farm in Marshall, NC. Laura has a long background in K-5 outdoor education; also working in renewable energy, green building, and organic agriculture.

She is a person who brings people together and never stops building!

We are so grateful she welcomed Mother Tree Permaculture students to Ruby Ranch. It’s a wonderful place to learn, build community, and be part of something bigger. We can’t wait for you to learn from her.
