Your 2025-26 Canby Cougars capped off their folkstyle season at the OSAA State Championships on Friday and Saturday.

Canby was led by its newest state champion Emilia Ensrud! Emilia became Canby’s first ever girls state champion, taking home the 6A/5A 120 lb title with a third period fall in the finals. She upset the #1 seed, who was a returning 3 time state champion, in the finals to pull off the feat. This was the junior’s third time placing at the state meet, improving upon her 3rd place finishes as a freshman and sophomore. She got to the finals with a pin in the semifinals and a pin in the first round, sandwiching a tight 10-8 quarterfinal win over the third place finisher at the weight. Ensrud then had a methodical comeback victory in the finals. She gave up a takedown in the first round and trailed 3-0 going into round 3, before getting an escape and a takedown to take the lead. Rather than sitting on the lead to close out her first championship, she slapped on her trademark half nelson and turned the three time state champion to her back to pick up the fall and become Canby’s first ever girls state champion.

The Canby boys finished in 8th place, led by five state placers. A trio of junior Domans all placed, led by 190 pounder Sam taking third. Sam made the semifinals to become a state placer for the first time. He then fell to the eventual champion of the weight class before bouncing back with two dominant victories to take third. Carson was the 5th place finisher at 150 lbs. He faced a tough draw, losing to the eventual state champion in the quarterfinals before bouncing back with two victories in order to become a first time state placer. He was dominating his consolation semifinal match before a controversial defensive fall call went against him. He then bounced back to win his final match and finish in 5th. Will rounded out the Doman placers, bouncing back from a quarterfinal loss to rally off two straight wins to become a two time state placer. He finished in 6th place at 165 lbs. Trey Smith and Dean Williams both became three time state placers with their performances. Smith, a junior, lost to the eventual runner up in the quarterfinals before picking up two dominant victories to become a placer once again. He had his eyes on the third place match, as he was dominating his consolation semifinal match before another controversial call went against the Cougars. Trey was on top when his opponent worked up to his feet. He then lifted his opponent to return him to the mat and was called for an illegal slam. His opponent was unable to return to the match, disqualifying Trey and sending him to the 5th place match. Trey dominated again to take home 5th at 126 lbs. Senior Dean Williams capped off his legendary career with a 6th place finish at 132 lbs. He won his first two matches to make the semifinals and become a three time state placer for the Cougars.

Canby will roll into freestyle and greco season this spring and summer.

Your Canby Cougar boys are league champions for the 5th year in a row and NWOC champions for the 4th year in a row after winning the 2026 NWOC district tournament on Saturday. It was a tight race against Hillsboro that came down to the finals, where Canby had 11 finalists to Hillsboro’s 10.

Trey Smith kicked off the finals party for Canby at 126 with a dominant tech fall. Trey was awarded outstanding wrestler of the lower weights for his performance in the tournament. NWOC character award recipient Dean Williams was next up for the Cougars at 132, picking up a major decision victory to become a league champion for the second straight year. Forrest Baumbaugh then lost a close match at 138 to an opponent who beat him by technical fall the last time they wrestled, to finish in 2nd. Ty Matthews got Canby back on track at 144, throwing his Hillsboro opponent to his back and pinning him in just over a minute to secure his first ever league championship in dominant fashion. Carson Doman was next up at 150 lbs, pinning his Hillsboro opponent in the second round to also become a first time league champion. Jacob Young lost via decision at 157 to the upper weights most outstanding wrestler of the tournament, to take 2nd. Will Doman also lost a close 3-2 match against a returning state placer at 165 lbs to finish in 2nd. Will was a 4th place finisher last year before taking 5th place at the state tournament. Caden Magenheimer also finished in 2nd at 175, losing to a two time state placer. This was Caden’s first time qualifying for the state tournament after missing all of last season with a serious injury. Sam Doman got Canby back on track at 190, picking up a second round fall to become a league champion for the first time and qualify for the state tournament for a second time. To finish the night, it was an all Canby final at heavyweight, with junior Cooper Ward picking up a close 3-1 victory in OT over fellow junior Luke Winningham. It was Cooper’s first league championship in a season in which he thought he might not be able to wrestle after suffering an injury in football season. Meanwhile Luke qualified for the state tournament by finishing 2nd in his first year wrestling.

Canby showed up in the consolation bracket as well, having 6 other wrestlers stamp their tickets to state by battling back to finish 3rd or 4th. First year sophomore Curtis Neuschwander battled back for 3rd place at 113 lbs. Clayton Hewlett bounced back from a first round loss to rally off 3 straight falls before finishing in 4th at 144. Senior Kohen Kraxberger took a similar route to qualify for the state tournament for the first time, losing his first match before winning the next 4 to take 3rd, avenging his first loss with a win in the 3rd place match. Roen Eschweiler only lost to a returning 2 time state placer in the semifinals at 175, pinning the rest of his opponents to take 3rd. Senior Noah Nieto and sophomore Adien Hernandez both lost in the semifinals at 215 before bouncing back in the consolation semifinals, to meet in the 3rd place match. Noah won that match to finish in 3rd for the second consecutive year. Adien qualified for the state tournament for the first time with his 4th place performance.

Jordan Greer and Jarrett Kelly rounded out the Cougar placers, each finishing in 5th place to set themselves up as potential injury replacements for the state tournament. Both young men showed great resolve, bouncing back from disappointing consolation semifinal matches to win in the 5th place match.

Canby Head Coach Brandon Harms and his staff: Barry Miles, Scott Doman, Mark Smith, Doug Kivett, Jim Gadberry, Alice Rickett, Haley Plett, Erika Irwin, and Jeremy Ensrud took home the NWOC coach of the year award for the 2nd straight year.

Canby’s 17 qualifiers on the boys side and 3 qualifiers on the girls side will be back in action February 27th and 28th at the OSAA State Championships.
