Do you feel like your brain is working against you? Like it's straight up broken?

ADHD symptoms can be frustrating and exhausting. I can't even tell you how many times I thought there was something SO wrong with me. I was having trouble with my second son and researching ADHD to see if that might be the root cause of the troubles. I discovered that I checked all of the boxes and that I was exactly like my son. He was a mirror of all of my bad habits and I didn't like what I was seeing.

It turns out that shame and guilt-trips are not at all effective (ADHD or not this is true) but particularly with the way the ADHD brain is wired. I was using all of the wrong tactics on myself and my son.

There is a better way to approach your ADHD. What if you could come from a place that was curious instead of judgmental? Calm instead of anxious? Confident instead of defensively reactive? Connected instead of isolated? Compassionate towards yourself and others?

My relationship with my son is night and day different but that hasn't been the most important shift. My relationship with myself has made all the difference. Instead of thinking I am this useless broken thing, I now know I'm capable of so much more than I ever thought possible.

Are you tired of trying so hard? Our brains are wired differently, but we still deserve the same opportunities as everyone else!

It's time for a new approach to living with ADHD - one where we start doing what works best for us instead of fighting our own minds every step of the way.

I’m dedicated to helping my fellow neurodivergents to take control of their lives by understanding why they think, act, and feel the way they do in certain situations. I want to help them learn how changing just a few small habits can lead to big changes in quality of life, happiness levels, productivity at work/school/home...and more!

Do you want to know the feeling of total self-acceptance? Feeling you’re able to do more, be more, and share more than you ever have before?

Let’s talk.

Okay we’ve made it to the end! 🤪 This was a long road but hopefully you’ve found some helpful nuggets.

28. Put a quarterly reminder in your phone to check out your finances! Bank account, investment account, even retirement plan. Make sure all is well.

29. That quarterly review will be a lot easier if you’re online banking. Just make it as simple as possible for you otherwise you’ll resist and procrastinate.

30. Consolidate to a single checking account where possible. I understand the need for business checking and personal checking but no more than that!

31. Don’t go crazy with credit cards. We don’t need all the high-interest store or gas cards. Not to mention all the receipts and statements for so many different cards. We can stick to a couple major credit cards to simplify life.

32. Debit cards also simplify things significantly so don’t be afraid to use one! Some are clinging to that checkbook. You can still keep track in your check register if you’d like.

33. Keep som cash handy and safe for emergencies. You just never know when a natural or man-made disaster may make it kinda tough to get to an ATM machine. We don’t need to live in fear but preparation is still smart!

24. Keep those categories BROAD. We are less likely to stick with an over-complicated system but it’s also our tendency to create too many categories. 😂 Keep it nice and simple.

25. Have a Document hotspot. A red transparent file folder, somewhere you will SEE it. This will hold anything that needs attn within 24 hours. Try to keep it to no more than 5, whether it be an overdue bill, a phone message that needs returning, a task for work, etc.

26. You can actually add yourself to the “ DO NOT SEND” list to cut back on junk mail! Hooray! Go to DMAchoice.org for more information.

27. Processing the mail everyday keeps it from becoming overwhelming. Stack the habit on top of something else that you for sure do every day and you’ll keep up! But don’t beat yourself up if it piles up again. Just make quick decisions and move on. We’ve got this!

20. We love to have several projects going at once but quickly find ourselves in overwhelm which leads to procrastination and paralysis! Tie up all the loose ends on one project before beginning another. It IS possible! 😂

21. Use sticky notes to easily get you back on task. If you must answer a call or, in my case, your kids need something that pulls you away from your project, grab a sticky note and write yourself a note to remember where you were so you can easily dive right back in. Takes away the fear of being interrupted.

22. Make “habit stacking” a regular thing. Changing the clocks for daylight savings in the fall is also time to change the batteries in the smoke detector. Random associations work for our brains so get creative!

23. Put everything in zones. Gardening, painting, tools, sports equipment, etc. It can be just like a home-improvement store in there. If it seems too overwhelming a task, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Or even HIRE help if you’re able. We’ve got this!

Now take these suggestions with a grain of salt because it know there are some of us who love our variety! 😂 But if you just have a lot of clothing sitting around not EVER being worn, get it OUT of there!

18. There are some people who can get away with just a few staples and then change up the accessories and call it good! Judith Kolberg, in the article I’ve mentioned in previous posts, suggests a spring/summer wardrobe centered around two colors plus white. Fall/winter, two other colors plus black. Again, grain of salt but the most important is to get the clothes OUT that you are not wearing!

19. If you have trouble making the decision of what to wear, make that decision ahead of time to simplify. Pre-assemble those outfits on the hanger or in the drawer. So much easier! This is the best way to pack for a trip rather than WAY overpacking which I was prone to do.

These steps are a struggle for me, I’ve got a major “floordrobe” happening right now! 🤣

I need to go through a big purge! We’ve got this!

15. I like to play, “race the microwave” when I’m using it. Instead of just sitting there and waiting for it be done. Use those minutes to tidy the counter or take out the recycling/trash. We don’t always have huge chunks of time to do all the things! I’m learning this the hard way especially with little kids. Take advantage of the small chunks of time and do SOMETHING!

16. This is super helpful to have a place for all the thing you’ll need easily accessible next to the door. Hooks for keys and backpacks, basket for wallet, bin for shoes, Whatever is going to make the transition out the door faster. Keep it simple!

17. Empty those pockets! Receipts, file them of chuck them! Loose change? Get a jar or piggy bank and by the end of the month you’ve got an extra $15 to spend! Make it a nightly ritual to do so.

They might seem like simple things but they stack up to a simplified life. We’ve got this!

13. Do we actually have to keep every single one of these financial statements? Check with your accountant and see if quarterly is enough. Or better yet, go paperless!

14. Unread magazines can pile up quick! Keep a small (emphasis on the small) basket where you keep a few. Once it’s full, you’ve got to go through and keep the ones you’ll read and recycle the rest. If there are some you are never getting to, cancel that subscription!

Judith Kolberg offered a webinar on Organization Solutions for people with ADHD. She shared several ideas that I just loved! Here’s a couple more.

11. We take forever to decide whether or not to throw away a greeting card, random screws, CDs, all these random things we agonize over. Kolberg suggests having a “ripening drawer” where we quickly toss these things. Once it is full, quickly sort. Use what we can and toss the rest. If you have a free drawer, try it out!

12. Get yourself a “clutter companion.” This is a nonjudgmental friend or family member to help you get through the clutter! A couple times a year, you both get together and sort into the four piles, KEEP, TOSS, DONATE & AGE. Discard the TOSS immediately and get those donations to the nearest drop-off ASAP. The AGE items can be put in a box or a bin with a date for three months out. Put a calendar event in your phone and go through the box or put a new date on it if you need more time.

We can totally stop making it a BIG DEAL! Easier said than done I know but breaking it down makes it manageable. We’ve got this!

9. It’s a lot harder to lose a bright red or hot pink wallet/checkbook/phone case than it is to lose a brown or black blend-in-with-everything. It’s hard for your eye not to see the bright color so less likely to be forgotten!

10. Those random impulse buys can add up to a lot of clutter in the home. Instead opt for experiences when rewarding yourself with “retail therapy.” Go for a massage or a night out with friends. So fun!
