Students in our Floral Design course wasted no time jumping into the new semester! 💐

This week, they learned about processing techniques for cut flowers, created their first mound arrangements, and participated in an anonymous critique, giving and receiving feedback on each other’s creations!

Go figure- our alumni love being outside exploring and learning years after FLCC! Trout Lake Pond Puttering- New York State Flora Association field trip at Letchworth State Park on June 12th. Environmental Conservation Professor Maura Sullivan joined field trip leader Kyle Webster (botanist with NY Natural Heritage Program, Horticulture A.A. and Science A.S. 2014) and fellow participants; Joshua Fisher (NY state parks, Natural Resource Conservation A.A. 2005), and Charlie Ippolito (biologist for NY state parks, Environmental Studies A.S. 2019) for a great day of botanizing and wet feet.

End of semester paddle for environmental conservation students on Honeoye Lake! No better way to reflect on a successful semester than relaxing with friends and classmates on the water.

Our horticulture students wrapped up a full makeover of one of our courtyard flowerbeds this week — after starting the process with a cleanup this past fall! Check out the process and the behind-the-scenes work they put in here! 🪏🪴

This flowerbed will now serve as a living classroom where students can study various plant specimens they learn about in courses such as Woody & Herbaceous Plant Materials!

We’re thinking the students in conservation club may have a future in fashion ahead of them…

Conservation club put their art skills to the test last week! Students (and faculty & staff) joined to tie-dye con club t-shirts and add fish prints.

The end of the semester is near and it was a great day to bond as students and relax from preparing for the end of the semester!

The fish used were caught by fisheries techniques and fish culture students and included walleye, lake trout, yellow perch, bluegill, and rock bass.

One of campus’ hidden gems 🌱🌸

Inside the greenhouse, students have been growing hundreds of plants for campus landscape plantings, next month’s Commencement ceremony, and our upcoming Spring Plant Sale! We’re excited to open the greenhouse to the campus community soon—more details coming soon!

Last week a few students took a tour of SUNY Cobleskill as a potential transfer option after their time at FLCC!

SUNY Cobleskill prides themselves on hands on learning and personable faculty & staff. This visit lived up to that reputation as students got the opportunity to go birding, work up hatchery fish, shock fish in a local creek, and look at the Cobleskill Herpetology laboratory. Thank you for this exciting & experiential day!

Students in our Nursery Management and Tree Culture & Maintenance courses spent the day at Wafler Nurseries learning about their grafting and budding techniques, as well as getting a behind-the-scenes look at their nursery, orchards, and storage facilities. 🍎🌳

Laker Day part 2!

In addition to the field trip to the Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens, faculty, staff, and students hit the campus trails for the annual BioBlitz. Our day started off with a reading from Aldo Leopold’s “A Sand County Almanac”, noting the power of experiencing natural wonders firsthand.

We hit a record number of 120 species, beating last year’s numbers of 86 species. Specifically we had 56 plants, 39 birds, 11 insects, 4 fish, 3 mammals, 2 reptiles, 2 amphibians, 1 fungi, 1 mollusk, and 1 crustacean. Not bad for just 3 hours of identifying species together!
