Dear Ms. O'Connor
For the last 5 years I've traveled to Haiti frequently, first with medical treatment groups and eventually establishing a clinic in Cite Soleil.
Currently I work with colleagues that are a group of firefighters/paramedics (like myself), most of Haitian descent, who live and work in the States. We were informed that in Haiti, babies choking was epidemic, and no one knew what to do if a child did choke. Over the years during disaster preparedness and first aid training, we've always included CPR to families, hotel workers, industry in Haiti and the ponpyes (firefighters) of Haiti. During one trip, one man returned to class the next day and was so excited about what he had learned that he gathered his whole neighborhood and showed them the choking maneuvers! In addition, Heartsaver CPR and AED has been taught to the workers at Comme il Faut (an industrial cigarette company) the staff of Voila (one of the leading phone providers of Haiti), the Haitian scouts, similar to our boy scouts, and Villa Creole, an American owned Hotel that was instrumental in caring for people after the earthquake. Their staff had been trained in CPR and first aid just weeks before. Miracles do happen!
