Food safety was on the menu this week in the Intro to Culinary Arts classes!
We are excited to feature Micah Holcombe, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service County Extension Agent for Family and Community Health, and her partnership with Yoe High School. Micah visited the classes Monday and Tuesday to teach the Certified Food Handler’s Course.
Students learned about foodborne illnesses, contamination, food allergies, cleaning and sanitizing, personal hygiene, and other important food safety practices. They also got hands-on experience learning the proper way to wash their hands.
One of the highlights was the Glo Germ activity. Students used a special powder that reacts under a black light to represent germs. As class continued, students wearing the powder touched their faces, clothes, and other surfaces, allowing their “germs” to spread. Under the black light, students could see just how easily germs can travel.
Afterward, students properly washed their hands and checked again under the black light to see how effective proper handwashing can be. One student in each class used only hand sanitizer, and the results gave the class an important lesson: hand sanitizer is not a substitute for proper hand washing when hands are visibly dirty or contaminated.
All 22 students completed a pre-test and post-test to measure their knowledge gained throughout the course.
These future culinary professionals are learning that good food starts with good food safety practices!
