In the face of tragedy and pain endured by so many around the world, I conclude I must love everyone even more deliberately, starting with my students. This past week, I celebrated a bear hug from a new student (knowing the context makes it extra meaningful!), the shining eyes and high five from an excited beginner who is taking his first flight in trusting his ability to think for himself, the relaxed posture of a student who is now sold on the merits of working hard, and the wonder of a 5-year-old who feels free to explore sound together.

Empowering others, heart to heart, is what it’s all about.

When your student’s family surprises you with a delicious home-made loaf of cardamon-spiced sweet bread traditional from the Öland islands where their family originally came from. Wow!! I’ve been dunking it in my coffee all week. Reminds me of traditional Cougnolle (from the Low Countries, including Belgium) and makes me feel a sense of home. So grateful! 🥹 Let joy circulate into the new year.

This week’s harvest … got hugged by a bright-eyed 4-year-old student who hugged me after successfully learning a new song we played as a duet — he just couldn’t contain his excitement.

And then received the following note from a parent:

“I have been sitting here working and listening to X play and practice. It is so amazing to listen to. I had to call my mom and made her listen with me and it made her cry seeing how much he has improved. (…) We really appreciate your work and dedication with him. Thank you.”

Grateful teacher! Sometimes progress looks like this. But sometimes, holding a student accountable for their work or encouraging a student to challenge themselves more even as they resist, can be really tough on the teacher, even when we know we’re giving them the medicine they need. So I’ll take these little rewards.

Love my job! Love my students. Onward! 🥰
