A fifth-year PhD candidate in MIT Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE), Hugh Smith is researching sodium-ion batteries as a potentially more affordable and sustainable alternative to conventional lithium-ion technology.

By using more abundant materials like sodium, iron, and manganese, his work explores how batteries can balance cost, performance, sustainability, and reliability, and help support the transition to clean energy. ⚡
