It's Tip Tuesday! In keeping with this week's theme of "back to basics", my tip for today is to write it down. Studies show that putting pen (or pencil) to paper helps you to remember, creates focused thinking, and a higher probability that you will act on the thoughts you have written. So take a moment today and write down three things that you are thankful for. Make it a habit and I promise you, you will see a shift in your perspective of your life and the world.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This week, we are going back to basics because that is exactly where I find myself. I've been journaling a lot lately, but have not been spending time writing about what I am thankful for because there has been so much drama that I've needed to work through. But as I am reemerging, I've decided to go back to the beginning - the very first thing that I tell people when they ask how to incorporate the practice of gratitude into their daily lives. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I started a brand new gratitude journal.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Look, I don't have the time or energy to devote to pouring my heart out into multiple journals. My life isn't set up like that and I bet yours isn't either. So to remove that self imposed burden, this journal is starting out as just a running list of nouns and short phrases. Each day, I have to write down three things. I've been writing in this dedicated journal for a week now and I'm feeling a lot better about life. I'm able to shift my perspective more easily when necessary.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Do you use journaling in your gratitude practice? If so, how has it helped you? If not, what keeps you from trying?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I’m back, y’all!!! For real this time. I’ve been through the Dark Place and the Dark Place Adjacent, and now things feel like they’re just about back to my normal. Now it’s time to get this page back to normal.

Today’s Tuesday Tip is to turn your “I have to” into “I get to”. As always, this is about shifting your perspective. Life is full of unpleasant things that we must experience on a daily basis. I’ve talked in the past about looking for the positive in your negative and this is very similar.

There are also plea that if things in life that we see as a chore or a nuisance that truly aren’t. Take for instance this morning, I woke up and did not feel like I had slept at all. I was tired, cranky, and in pin. My first thought was, “Ugh! I have to get up and walk this dog!”, but then I remembered all the mornings that I found joy on that walk, even when I didn’t feel like being out there. So “I have to walk the dog” turned into “I get to get up and walk the dog!”

Life is short, y’all. Find joy in the simple things. It will completely change your outlook. What “I have to” can you reframe into an “I get to” today?

This is me looking down at the hole I just clawed my way out of. While this picture would suggest that I’ve completely overcome The Dark Place, that is not true. I still have a lot of work to do.

This week, my goal is to share with you my best tips for practicing gratitude. This is more than writing three things you’re thankful for everyday, although there is great power in that. The tips I’m sharing will hopefully shift your perspective and allow you to see things you should be thankful for that you may have overlooked.

Tip: Turn your negative into a positive.

Because I am predisposed to seeing the negative waaaaay before I see the positive, I have adopted this practice to try and train my brain. It’s not easy, but once you start doing it, it becomes habit.

Let’s take the last six weeks of my life; some of the darkest of my life. Having come through the other side, I can now look back at that time in a positive light. I now see that time as a forced chance to sit still and reset. God knew that I felt guilty about taking time off and I wasn’t going to do it voluntarily, so He sat me down. (I’m not saying He put me in The Dark Place, just that he allowed that negative and used it for His purpose.). Now don’t get me wrong, while I was down in that hole, I saw nothing positive about it. Hindsight can be beautiful.

So today, I challenge you to think about a negative situation in a positive light. Turn your negative into a positive. Shift your perspective. Be thankful.

Allow me to reintroduce myself. I’m Kisha and I’m striving to live a life of gratitude while giving you inspiration and tips to do the same.

There are lots of life coaches that would have you believe that practicing gratitude is the magic trick to making your life wonderfully happy and full of rainbows and glitter. I’m not going to tell you that because it hasn’t been true in my life. For me, practicing gratitude has helped me to feel more rooted, strengthened my faith, and helped the rough patches and dark places to be a bit easier to deal with.

You see, my brain is wired to see the negative first and to always have a plan B through G. My constant battle with depression and anxiety means that there seems to be darkness lurking around every corner. I’m sure some of you can relate. Practicing gratitude makes all that heaviness a bit lighter. It shines a bit of light in the darkness. It has saved my life more than once.

That’s why I know that gratitude has a strong transformative power. That’s why I think that everyone should practice it. That’s why I’d like to help you incorporate the practice into your life.

Please joint me this week as I give you my best tips on how to practice gratitude and how to make it a daily habit.

This is one of my absolute favorite tips. It's simple yet, so very powerful and has the ability to clear your overwhelm and give you a little clarity and peace in a hectic day.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When life gets crazy and stressful and things around you seem to be moving way faster than you are, in that moment, just pause, close your eyes, take a deep breath, and say thank you. Enjoy the brief moment of darkness. Really be mindful of your lungs filling up and emptying. Feel your shoulders start to loosen and lower. When you say "thank you", I bet a little grin will form on your lips. When you open your eyes, you'll be surprised at how much better you feel and the world around you looks.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Practicing gratitude improves your mood. Notice I didn't say it will make you happy. It'll probably reignite that warm glow of joy somewhere deep in you, but practicing gratitude is not a happy pill. Trust me on this.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I started Thank You Daily in 2014. About 18 months in, I completely stopped posting. I was fighting depression. Getting out of bed was a chore. My body was constantly fighting against me. All I wanted to do was give into the darkness and spend my life in bed. I felt like telling folks that they oughta be thankful was a fake sentiment when I couldn't do it myself. That bout of depression held onto me for quite awhile.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My most recent bout of depression hit me in late November 2020. I had been sick for a couple weeks at that point and I had no idea what was wrong with me. That sickness lasted for months and I found myself right back in The Dark Place.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When January rolled around, I decided to pick back up my practice of gratitude. You see, somewhere between 2016 and 2020, I figured out that you can be thankful and feel gratitude and still be depressed. You can feel gratitude and still feel sad. You can feel gratitude and still experience pain.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Looking at the world through a lens of gratitude can definitely turn a gray sky blue...for some people. For others of us, it just makes the day not as gray as it would have been without practicing gratitude. And that's perfectly fine too.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Practicing gratitude most definitely improves your mood, but don't let folks have you believing that it will make your life full of unicorns and butterflies, 'cause that just ain't true, but it will probably help you to see a rainbow, however fleeting, in the midst of a storm.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
