As we approach Early Decision deadlines, it's time to polish your supplemental essays. Here are our LAST MINUTE TIPS we actually use to help polish our students' essays before submitting. Here, we focus on claim sentences that stick, real, powerful anecdotes, and how to keep it conversational!) 👇
1. Make Your Claim Memorable.
Think about a statement that captures your perspective or experience in a way that’s truly you. This should be the “hook” that gives readers a unique insight right off the bat. Try writing a sentence you’d say out loud in a conversation, even if it feels a bit quirky. If your topic sentence sounds like the start of a Ted Talk, you're on the right track.
2. Keep Your Stories Relevant & Cut Out the Fluff
Once you’ve got your claim, use only the most relevant, impactful details to bring it to life. Anecdotes are great, but students often struggle to stick to the point. Cut anything that doesn’t serve the claim—this keeps it crisp and focused.
3. Reword funky sentences with a verbal trick!
If a sentence is bothering you but you don't quite know why, try this: state the high-level idea of your sentence out loud as if you’re explaining it to a friend. Write down exactly what you say and refine it into a clean sentence. Remember, try not to sound excessively smart on purpose — you'll come across as inarticulate.
