I'm re-stringing, setting up and cleaning a collection of guitars for a friend. He has some interesting pieces. Check out this Fender Telecaster TLAC. This one was made as prototype in their Custom Shop. Steve Winwood is currently touring with it's brother. They sound amazing.

The blessings of teaching guitar in a small community! Saturday I was invited to a "Send Off" party for one of my long term students, Ryan Widmaier. He has joined the U.S. Army and is leaving this week. He and his family have captured my heart as I watched him from his first performance ( with acoustic guitar ) till Saturday. I have enjoyed every minute with him. Not only teaching him guitar but as friends talking about surfing and even going to Assateague Island National Seashore to surf together. He is an outstanding young man and I'm excited to see where this new chapter of his life takes him. Please keep him in prayers for a safe and successful future.

The early days of Mesa Boogie. This ad was in my February 1982 Guitar Player Magazine. You had to order their amps direct from Randall. You couldn't see them or heard them. They had not yet established a dealer network. You had to trust that they knew what they were doing and send in your money in advance! I ordered one in 1981. They shipped it air freight. I remember going to the BWI freight terminal to pick it up. I used it many years. It never broke down!

Warning ... More guitar gear gab! People often ask if my amps are " tube" amps and if tubes are still available. My musician friends know my answer to both questions is - yes! Since 1970 I've only used tubes. I love the way they sound and how they interact with me. I remember when manufacturers started offering the first "solid state" amps. They were lighter, needed little or no maintenance and had plenty of clean power. Many thought, this would be the end of tube amps. But, that didn't happen! Amp designers continued to evolve their designs. Oddly, in a way, the solidstate designs tried to reproduce the sound of tube amps, especially when driven into distortion. Some really good solidstate amps were produced but tube amps didn't disappear. Fast forward to digital designs. Ultimately and amazingly, engineers figured out how to " sample" real ... you guessed it .. tube amps, not exclusively but disproportionately. High quality effects were added to the digital designs and allow the guitarist almost endless options to reproduce their favorite amp sounds and store them for recall any time they want. They are light weight, sound great recorded or live ... yet tube amps are still in use on most pro stages and in studios! In fact there are more tube amps being built now than ever. From AC/DC to John Mayer to Brad Paisley you will find tube amps on their stages and recording studios. For many guitarist there is something special about a great tube amp. They have survived, even thrived for roughly 80yrs! US production of tubes pretty much ceased roughly 30yrs ago. Thankfully over that same time investment was made in overseas production plants. Today there are still NOS American and European made tubes available. They are expensive and they are generally great however, supply is diminishing and will eventually run out. Many of the new tubes produced overseas are really good and not outrageously priced. I usually keep a "stash" of tubes ans was really pleased to pickup more of these beauties! They sound great. In many instances the new tubes are indistinguishable from NOS tubes. BTW - there are still many great stereo systems being made with tube designs. They are expensive but many audiophiles feel the same way us guitarist do ... we enjoy and prefer the sound of tube amplification. Cheers.
