How many butternuts do you see?

Butternut squash is ready to harvest 2 weeks after the fruits have fully colored. They will develop a dull appearance with a rind that is difficult to puncture with your fingernail. When harvesting, leave about 1 inch of fruit stem.

Applications for the Spring 2025 Master Gardener Basic Training Class are due November 15. Call the University of Maryland Extension - Dorchester office for more information. 410-228-8800.

Classes run from January 28 to April 1, 2025. It will be a hybrid training style with Zoom meetings on Friday mornings and in-person classes on Wednesday nights, 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm, at the Eastern Shore Higher Center, located on the Chesapeake College campus in Wye Mills, MD. The fee is $200 + $15 background check.

With the coming of fall, it's important to leave the leaves. Leaves provide nutrients and cover for overwintering pollinators. Leaves leaves in piles if possible. If you can rake them up and pile them in your flower and or garden beds, they will provide nutrients for the next growing season. Leave litter provides shelter for overwintering pollinators and beneficial insects, such as bumble bees, wooly bear caterpillars, Lady beetles, moths, butterflies, snails, spiders, and much more. These insects then provide food for birds and animals during the winter.

So, leave the leaves!

Planting cover crops, such as clover, rye, or vetch, can prevent soil erosion, suppress weeds, and enhance soil fertility by adding organic matter and nutrients. These plants act as a natural blanket, protecting the soil from harsh winter weather and retaining moisture. They can even attract beneficial insects and create a more vibrant ecosystem in your garden.

As spring approaches, you can till the cover crops into the soil, enriching it further and preparing your garden bed for the new growing season. However, do not let your cover crops create seeds.

Not only will your garden benefit from healthier soil, but you'll also experience the joy of seeing a lush, green cover through the winter months.
