Stinging Nettle Pesto🌱
🌱Mineralizing Nettles, harvested sustainably (and with gloves!) at the farm next door — make the most delicious spring pesto to combat seasonal allergies.

Served here over fresh pasta with green peas, zaatar, and fennel seeds. So tasty! Highly recommend.

Comment “Nettles” and I’ll send you the recipe. [First step is to blanche the stinging nettles in boiling water for one minute to remove the sting.]

The west coast has lit us up — after a long cold east coast winter, this trip has added texture and color to our palettes. The wildflowers and flowering trees make my herbalist heart explode. Thank you California poppies, Palo Verde trees, all the wild fennel, rosemary, lavender, bougainvillea…you sure know how to fill the world with beauty and magic.
😎☀️🌱🌺💜💛🌊🌁🌮🏄‍♀️🌉🧡🌅

It’s not often that I get to return, 20 years later, to where I lived and taught for a decade. Seeing students and friends who became and still are family — there is truly nothing sweeter. That decade was such a time of searching, learning, expanding. Now, being back here with Dave, and showing him all my old haunts after such a long cold east coast winter, has me overcome with joy and emotion. I miss this (west) coast every day (everything is always in bloom! The coffee! The farmer markets! The big mama Pacific Ocean, the Redwoods, the incredible vistas!) And, I’m lucky to be able to integrate all of it into my now east coast life. The most missing comes from the extraordinary humans I met here, and I’m so lucky they all made quality time for us this weekend. Thank you, Bay Area. You helped to grow me up. So much of who I am was formed here; my heart is brimming with the effulgence of this place: the ocean, the plants, the people. With deep bows of gratitude and fullness, we now drive south down the Pacific Coast Highway to LA. # # #

Spring medicine emerges🌱🌱💛💚
Rip Van Wrinkle daffs, Nettles, Cleavers, Comfrey.
Soon, I’ll be making nettle pesto, cleaver tincture for immunity and skin issues, and comfrey compost tea for my dahlias.

My favorite day! Bringing up my Dahlia tubers from overwintering in the basement. So happy they all look plump and happy. I don’t divide them. These tubers are from my wedding in 2021. It’s so meaningful to keep these babes year after year — they’ve imbued our lives with astonishing late blooming beauty — a metaphor for our union. I pot them up indoors so they’ll have a head start to the growing season. Some folks say Dahlias are too high maintenance; I say, WORTH IT. For us, they are all joy and magic.
