Congratulations to Dr. Isabel on successfully defending her PhD! 🎓 It was a pleasure celebrating this milestone with colleagues from NSE -Nuclear Science and Engineering at MIT.

I'm thrilled to share that my latest paper has been published in Applied Radiation and Isotopes! This publication marks a meaningful outcome of my postdoctoral research at MIT. Grateful for the opportunity and support along the way, to my P*s Prof Haruko Wainwright and Prof Michael Short as well as my sponsor Tolga Durak and the amazing research team Dr. Edward Lamere, Mitchell Galanek, Dr. Jiankai Yu and Dr. Akmal Safarov.

Today we celebrate George de Hevesy’s birthday! He was a radiochemist who helped develop radioactive tracers.

Born in 1885, de Hevesy first stumbled on radiotracers while trying to perform another experiment (that proved to be impossible) involving radium-D, or lead-210. A radiotracer is made by replacing one or more atoms of a chemical compound with a radioactive isotope of the same chemical element. Then by using a sensitive radiation detection device, scientists can track the small amount of radiation released from the radioactive isotope. In this case, de Hevesy figured out he could introduce a small sample of lead-212, a radioactive isotope of lead, into the roots of a plant and then by monitoring how it moved through a plant, he could understand the plant’s metabolic processes. This work on radiotracers earned de Hevesy the 1943 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. Radiotracers are still an effective tool used today in a range of areas, from medicine to industry to environmental science.
