2018 Asian American Election Protection - Volunteer Sign-Up Form 09/22/2018

Spend Election Day (Nov. 6, 2018) Defending Asian American Voting Rights!

In past elections across the country, Asian Americans have faced a series of barriers in exercising their right to vote, including segregated “Asian” voting lines. In response, the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) has conducted a non-partisan survey of Asian American voters to document Asian American voting patterns and document instances of anti-Asian voter disenfranchisement. AALDEF has monitored the elections for compliance with the federal Voting Rights Act, which mandates bilingual ballots and forbids anti-Asian voter discrimination.

We need your help. Become an Exit Poll volunteer and help defend against Asian American voter suppression. Sign up today through the Volunteer Sign-Up Form! Volunteers work in three hour shifts. Knowledge of Asian languages are helpful but not necessary. There will be a one-hour training session for all volunteers in October (90 minutes for CLE credit), time/location TBD. All volunteers must be non-partisan during the time that they help. If you have any questions, please email Voting Rights Organizer Fiona Zhao at [email protected].

Petition: HLS Needs an Asian Pacific American Alumni Reunion! 11/27/2017

In 2016, Harvard Law School held the fourth Celebration of Black Alumni and in 2017 it held the third Celebration of Latino Alumni. To our knowledge, no "Celebration of APA Alumni" or equivalent event is being planned by the HLS administration. APALSA emphatically believes that this needs to change.

If you also believe that HLS should hold a reoccurring APA alumni reunion, please sign this petition (https://goo.gl/forms/xWWxvLvFomX2pTLI3) to show your support and interest. APALSA will bring the petition to the HLS administration later this year in our continual push to recognize Asian Pacific Americans as a valuable part of the HLS community.

Thank you for your support! Please feel free to share this petition with your networks.

Fighting from the Margins: An APA Heritage Month Exhibit 04/12/2017

Hello APALSA Alumni! Just wanted to share out APAHM exhibit with you all.
---
4.11.2017 - 4.20.2017
2nd Floor of Wasserstein Hall
Sponsored by the Dean of Students Office

After more than a decade of advocacy, May was officially declared “Asian Pacific American Heritage Month” in 1990 with the passage of Public Law 101-283 by the 101st Congress. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese Americans to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad, which was largely constructed by Chinese American migrant laborers, on May 10, 1869.

While the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community is generally perceived as one achieving high income and high educational attainment, it actually houses some of the neediest populations in America. The “AAPI” label captures over 25 distinct subgroups with different immigration histories, cultural backgrounds, and socioeconomic barriers.

Today, we elevate voices of the individuals in our community whose stories are often left out of the mainstream Asian American narrative. We recognize ongoing struggles that confront the AAPI community and honor its rich history of organizing, action, and coalition-building.
