Dear members of the Harvard Black Pre-Law Association,
Our thoughts, frustration, and sadness focus on Jacob Blake, his family, and the city of Kenosha, WI now as we see yet another instance of police brutality and citizen violence against black people. We hope this community can be a source of support for any of you who are struggling during this painful time.
Our mission is to "provide exposure, information, and resources to students, black students in particular, about pursuing entrance into legal institutions and careers involving law." We strive to support black students on our paths to participate in, influence, and improve our nation's justice system. Upon reflection at the beginning of this summer, we decided to adjust our logo to better reflect the focus of our mission. With the help of Alexis Queen, Class of 2023, and the newly founded Harvard Design Collective, the executive board decided to make a change, now depicting Lady Justice as a Black woman.
We are excited to begin the 2020-21 school year with a logo that better represents our membership playing a role in the ex*****on of justice. As we enter the summer after an especially difficult and atypical school year, BPLA wants to take a moment to offer itself as a resource for you, in whatever way we can be. Please know that like you, we are also reeling from these tragedies, and we recognize the duty that we have as firstly a Black space and then, as a legal organization, to fight the continued injustice police brutality imposes on our friends, families and neighbors.
We not only state our mission to this community, and all Black communities on paper, but we further our duty through our words and in our actions. That is why, on top of disseminating materials to our members and making ourselves available to all Black students, like many of the Black organizations on campus we will also be matching donations to organizations like the Minnesota Freedom Fund, Reclaim the Block, and the Innocence Project, up to $2,000. We will also be sponsoring food donations to school children in Minnesota whose grocery stores have been closed due to violence in the area.
Please email receipts of donations to [email protected] or send them via GroupMe, if you'd like to have them matched!
