As president of the LFU, I am happy to announce that after lengthy negotiations we have ratified a collective bargaining agreement with the Longy School of Music through 2024. It was hard work, but something we can use. Tom Enman

The Longy Faculty Union has been in negotiation with Longy for the renewal of its 2011 Collective Bargaining Agreement since March 2014. We have met with the School 39 times, along with many hours of planning. Against the back-drop of shifting conditions over these many months, both sides have worked steadily to build trust and respect, open lines of communication, and resolve long-standing disputes. As we are now in our third contract extension, the time is now to finish this work and bring it to LFU members for ratification. The LFU and the School share this goal.
The 10/20/2015 article in the Boston Globe focuses on the litigation involving Longy and the charges brought against it by the National Labor Relations Board. While we do not know the main impetus for this article, details regarding the labor disputes and charges are available in the public record - any reporter may read them at any time at the NLRB website. The issues in the current consolidated complaint remain important: a legal and serviceable Faculty Handbook, and the administration and continuity of summer programs at Longy. The Negotiation Team has been working hard with the School to resolve these issues, to settle them in the context of our new CBA, and to create firm basis for innovation and collaboration between administration and faculty to secure Longy’s future.
The Longy Faculty Union is firmly committed to its job of representing faculty. Longy’s 100th anniversary offers new urgency for faculty and administration to come together to begin a fresh chapter in the life of the School. The LFU hopes to work in partnership with the School, as we continue to offer inspired and relevant music education.
In solidarity,
The LFU Executive Board and Negotiation Team

At our session on June 22, both the LFU and the School agreed to extend the current Collective Bargaining Agreement until July 31, 2015, allowing more time for both sides to hammer out the details on the remaining crucial topics while in the midst of the season of vacations and festivals.
Since the end of the academic year in May, the LFU contract negotiation committee has spent many hours in sessions with the School. These committee members have devoted considerable amounts of time in order to provide accurate facts and figures on income, years of experience, and benefits, working in conjunction with the AFT-MA, which has provided helpful professional advice. We have been, and continue to be, fully committed to shaping a strong CBA that includes pay increases and better job security for the entire Faculty, as well as a higher degree of administrative communication and transparency.
In the coming sessions, the LFU looks forward to further productive meetings with the School, working toward a successor CBA which may be agreed upon by both sides. The LFU is looking forward to both sides redoubling their efforts in these final weeks.
