Thank you to all of our Significant Elders for joining us on Significant Elders Day! They joined us for an All School Sing and then the Elders joined their students to experience a day of learning at Cambridge Friends School. It was our pleasure to host family and friends of our students to experience our school community first hand.

Recently, Our 3rd/4th grade students studied the work of Henri Matisse; a celebrated fauvist painter who later in life transitioned to making paper cuts as his health impacted his mobility. Each student reflected on a topic that they felt passionate about advocating for and created a papercut protest poster in the style of Matisse's paper cuts. While this project offered time to consider social justice issues in their community, it also presented an opportunity to explore how the elements of design impact the dynamic nature of an image, as students experimented with shape, color, and space to bring about a balanced and eye-catching poster.

This week in PreK/K played the pattern block game! Playing in pairs, each player spun to see which pattern block shape they would add to the design. When they were finished spinning, it was time to record how many of each shape were part of the design. Everyone then used ten frames to double-check the total after counting all of the blocks in the design. Great job, students!

Big Week in our PreK/K class!
After completing their first books, everyone shared their stories with our first- and second-grade students during community time on Friday. Each student took a turn to read their writing. Some people read their own words, and some people had help remembering their story. Everyone got a round of applause! We are working on making model planets using papier-mache over a balloon form. We started doing some research, looking at the pictures in books. Many people noticed that their planets were different colors across different books.

First and second grade students explored text features by becoming surgeon's! Students worked hard to find the right text features to save their patients and complete successful surgeries in order to cure their patients. Text features are parts of a non fiction text that give readers more information and help them understand the text such as the heading, pictures and captions, diagrams, bold and italic text, index, glossary and table of contents. Great job, class!

We love Pi Day! To celebrate everyone's favorite infinite number, π, our 5/6 students made their own apple hand pies. They created their own dough at home using a shared recipe and then assembled in class! Looks delicious!
