This Monday, in celebration of MLK Day, our Morahs will engage in a day of professional development, learning from a facilitator about creating inclusive classroom environments that cater to diverse learners. We are eager to share our insights following this enriching experience!
Our aim is to pass on the message of inclusivity, one aspect of Dr. King’s legacy, to our impressionable students. It’s important that they witness real-life examples of embracing differences and ensuring everyone feels included. This enables them to translate these principles into their own experiences.
Children often encounter exclusion or unkind language during play, and at Tamim, we empower them to use a “strong and kind” voice to stand up for themselves or their friends. A strong and kind voice involves confidently asserting oneself, such as saying, “I’m smart!” while responding with kindness, “Would you like to join my game?”
This dual approach teaches children to stand firm in asserting themselves or supporting a friend who has been wronged, all while incorporating kindness. By modeling effective communication, we leave them feeling positively empowered, nurturing confident and compassionate children who consistently look out for others.

This year, we have been busy exploring the wonderfully tactile and creative experience of using clay. As each child’s hands shaped and molded the natural material, there was a connection with the earth and an almost therapeutic quality to their process. We learned to make pinch pots and vessels as well as practicing the processes of slip and score to add smaller details to our work.
