Billy Bean. May his memory be for a blessing. I first learned of his story through the documentary “Out to Win,” then I had an opportunity to spend time with him during the Sports in Service of Humanity convening at The Vatican. Over the years, it became a deep friendship and one I greatly cherished.
Billy was kind, compassionate, sincere, faith-oriented even when he was tested, principled, a groundbreaker and (in his words) “accidental advocate” for equity and inclusion. He looked after others before himself. Took time to read *every* *single* *piece* of mail he received (there were 1000s) because of the responsibility he felt to be a beacon of light for others in the LGBTQIA+ community, individuals navigating loss and depression, and to spread his message of hope.
Billy shared his story with my brother Dan Pasternack for Dan’s first book (You’re Not Welcome Here) and with our Athletes' Voices community via our webinars and in person at our Atlanta convening as a featured VOXBOX speaker. I wish he had been given time to share it with more people.
Cancer (specifically Leukemia) has taken away yet another bright light. I loved Billy and I only hope he knew how much of a difference he made during his short sixty years here on Earth.
