There’s a lot more to coaching than writing good training sessions.

Christian Parrett has been coaching for more than a decade, after spending years racing at UCI level himself. He’s also gone on to complete a Master’s in High Performance Endurance Sport, adding to the experience he already had from years in the sport.

But knowing the science is only one part of coaching. A big part of the job is figuring out what each athlete actually needs from him. How much do they want to know? What do they respond to? And how do you build enough trust that when something really matters, they listen?

We caught up with Christian about his racing career, his path into coaching and what he’s learned from more than ten years of working with athletes.

How many carbs do you need on the bike? It depends.

Ride duration, intensity and conditions all affect how much carbohydrate you need. For rides beyond two hours, around 60g per hour is a good starting point, while longer or harder rides may call for 90g or more.

It also depends on what comes next. If you’re training again later that day, or need to recover quickly for another hard session, fueling during the ride becomes more important.

And more isn’t always better. At very high intensities, your body relies more on carbohydrates while fueling can become harder, making what you eat and when you eat it just as important as the total amount.

EF Pro Cycling Head of Nutrition Dr. Anna Carceller breaks down how to fuel for different rides in an article for EF Pro Cycling. We’ve pulled out some of the key takeaways here.

Hormonal contraception is common among female athletes, but how much do we actually understand about its role in training, health and performance?

In this clip, Professor Kerry McGawley talks about what hormonal contraception can change or mask, and why it’s worth having a proper conversation before making those decisions.

It’s just one part of a much bigger conversation in Episode 6 of The Cycling Performance Podcast, where Kerry joins Nathan Haas and Colby Pearce to talk about the menstrual cycle, female athlete health and how coaches can better support the athletes they work with.

Some riders need a coach to push them. Others need a coach to tell them when to stop.

In the latest episode of the Cycling Performance Podcast, Maddy Nutt sits down with Nathan and Colby to talk about the role accountability plays in coaching, and how riding more isn’t always the way to get faster.

Once upon a time, finding anything shorter than a 172.5 mm crank in a WorldTour service course was rare. Today, it’s a very different story.

In this clip, Nathan Haas explains why more riders are experimenting with shorter cranks, what changes they’re seeing, and why there’s a point where shorter stops being better.

Have you experimented with crank length, or are you still riding the same size you’ve always used?

“We’re not looking at today. We’re looking at stacking bricks, day on day, week on week, month on month, year on year.”

Frankie explains why the best training plans aren’t built around perfect sessions. They’re built around consistency.

That’s the philosophy behind every Team EF Coaching program.

Beyond the Cycle with Prof. Kerry McGawley

For many coaches, the menstrual cycle feels like one of the hardest conversations to start. But avoiding it doesn’t help athletes perform at their best.

In this episode, and Pearce are joined by Professor Kerry McGawley, a leading researcher in female athlete health and performance, to unpack what coaches and athletes actually need to know about the menstrual cycle.

They explore why communication matters more than expertise, how coaches can create an environment where athletes feel comfortable discussing their health, and why there is no one-size-fits-all approach to female performance. Along the way, they discuss common menstrual symptoms, the latest evidence on performance throughout the menstrual cycle, REDs, hormonal contraception, and practical strategies for supporting female athletes without overcomplicating training.

Whether you’re a coach, an athlete, or simply interested in the science of women’s health in sport, this conversation offers practical, evidence-based insights grounded in both research and real-world coaching.

Professor Kerry McGawley is Professor of Sports Science at Mid Sweden University, where she researches elite endurance performance and female athlete health. She also consults with athletes and teams worldwide and is an accomplished age-group triathlete, including winning the IRONMAN 70.3 Age Group World Championship.
