✍ Black Lives Matter Mural ( ) in Tulare, CA. Black LIves Matter is a movement that arose organically in the immediate wake of the murder of Trayvon Martin in 2013. The movement was most prominent following a series of high-profile murders of African Americans in the first half of 2020 in the midst a global pandemic. It reached a high mark in public opinion after George Floyd was mercilessly tortured and killed by law enforcement in Missouri. While BLM is a relatively new movement, the fight they are engaged in can be traced back to before the turn of the 20th Century with Ida B. Hayes and before even the United States Civil War with Fredrick Douglas and Harriet Tubman.

She quickly realized if she wanted to incorporate anything leafy and green into her diet, it was going to be food she found for free. So, she did her homework and began using the app Falling Fruit, which allows people to mark and share fruit-bearing trees in their neighborhoods."

✍ This monument is dedicated to the memory and work of a local artist. The words on the bottom left of the image on the piece state the following:

Carlos Almaraz (October 5, 1941 — December 11, 1989)

Carlos Almaraz was on of Los Angeles’s most important Mexican-American visual artists. Born in Mexico City, his family moved to Chicago and later to Los Angeles. In 1973 he established the L.A. artists group, Los Four. These artists were among the first to bring mainstream attention to the Chicano art scene and their street art, murals and artistic expression. Almaraz is best known for his “Echo Park” series of paintings and his art is internationally recognized and represented in most museum collections throughout the world.

Carlos Almaraz es considerado uno de los artistas visuals más importantes de Los Ángeles. Nacido en la Ciudad de México, se mudó a Chicago junto con su familia, para radicar finalmente en Los Ángeles. En 1973 integró la colectiva de artistas denominada “Los Four”, la cual marcó la pauta del Movimiento de Arte Chicano, al manifestarse principalmente en las calles del barrio con murales y otras formas artísticas. La serie de pinturas “Echo Park”, el la obra más conocida de Almaraz y la que abrió las puertas al recónocimiento internacional, así como su representaciónen varias colecciones de museos a nivel mundial.

✍️ This artwork alongside the I-10 offramp on the Rosemead side of Del Mar Avenue is a simple burl that was slightly modified to create the likeness of a large semi-aquatic rodent with a broom and cap. Upon closer look, the k**b looks less like a cartoon animal and more like a knot of wood.

Just off Main Street in Cambria, CA is a sign directing passers-by to a historical landmark that overlooks the town, "Nitt Witt Ridge" (this is the only place where this site has this spelling). The text below is an excerpt of the text on the laminated card stock attached to the fence of the property (except the hashtags of course):

Art Beal, born in Oakland of Irish and Native American parentage, spent much of his Childhood in orphanages.

He built a three-level fantasy environment from collected materials in Cambria, which locals called the Poor Man's Hearst Castle. This has a literal basis, as some construction material was scavenged from the Hearst estate. It helped that Beal was a local trash hauler, and had difficulty discarding things. He believed that everything could and should be reused. He salvaged nails and screws from old boards, and organized them in old glass jars. With pick ax and shovel, he hollowed out the 2.5 acre hillside in Cambria, using collected trash as landfill, to create an intricate network of terraced gardens, buildings, ornamental stone arches, fountains and walkways.

He did this, declared proudly, with only two helpers, Mother Earth and Dame Nature. When Art was forced to leave in 1989, the building remained vacant and continued to deteriorate for almost a decade...
