Today, we observe Juneteenth, a federal holiday signed into law in 2021.
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and shared the news that enslaved Black people there were free under the Emancipation Proclamation.
Also known as Freedom Day, Juneteenth is a time to reflect on history and celebrate Black freedom, culture and achievement.
