CSUCI students shoveled hay, unclogged a drainage channel and had a chance to pet some therapy horses during one of the many hands-on learning projects enjoyed by students in the Serve It Up Learning Community. Created by the Center for Community Engagement and faculty members Susan Lefevre and Emily Spitler-Lawson, the Serve It Up Learning Community immerses its members in learn-by-doing experiences in order to show them examples of social justice, activism and service.

On this particular excursion, 13 first-year students volunteered at the nonprofit Ride-On Therapeutic Horsemanship program in Newbury Park, helping the stables clear the effects of a winter storm.

In addition to cleaning up the ranch, students learned about the nonprofit’s mission and how riding and interacting with horses can help those with disabilities in multiple ways. Learn more at https://bit.ly/41DTmUV

Assistant Professor of Biology Rudolf “Rudi” von May is as comfortable in a classroom as he is deep in the Amazon jungle, armed with a bag and a snake hook.

Originally from Peru, von May’s expertise lies with amphibians and reptiles, so he was asked to be part of an international, interdisciplinary, multi-year research project aimed at studying and protecting areas of the Amazon. Von May’s job was to catalogue the species of amphibians and reptiles in the Peruvian Amazon.

His research adventures in the Amazon give von May a perspective that he brings into the classroom to share with his students in hopes that a deep knowledge of the precious resources around us—plants, animals, snakes and amphibians—inspire them with the same sense of stewardship toward the world around us.

The desire to pursue something bigger than himself and build a legacy of stories to share with his family is what drew CSUCI alumnus Edward Rodriguez to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps. His cousin had been a Marine during the Iraq War and he brought back riveting stories, and a sense of purpose. So, the Santa Barbara native enlisted and served in Afghanistan and Iraq in 2012 and 2014, returning with comrades he considered family.

But after experiencing a dark side to his return - witnessing many of his fellow infantrymen suffer with post-traumatic stress disorder - he wanted to understand, and help.

Rodriguez became the first in his family to attend college when he enrolled in CSUCI as a Psychology major with a minor in History. After graduating, he went on to pursue a master’s degree in Sociology.

“We have a responsibility to one another that continues long after we have left the battlefield,” he said.
