As part of the EDMS 527 course-Social Studies and Integrated Arts- prospective elementary teachers undertake a project where they research a “person we should know” who may not be in the textbooks (but should be). They use that information to create a dramatic and visual “Story Quilt” (based on the groundbreaking writing and art of Faith Ringgold) with individual panels depicting the amazing life and achievements of that person.

For the Fall ‘26 semester, the students chose Astronaut José Hernadez- the 1st NASA astronaut from a Mexican Migrant family and background. The artwork and words and images and everything here are from the creative minds of the 2026-2027 cohort of elementary teaching candidates. ✨
