Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. A focus of this year’s tour is a study of the river’s edge, a contested landscape of static and dynamic systems. Though ‘weedy’ to some, plants in this landscape are resilient to the river’s regimes of disturbance, competing for resources and the attention of the willing observer.

Today is World Fish Migration Day! The Tennessee River basin has a higher level of aquatic biodiversity than any other river system in North America.

Fish Move! Two of the basin’s river racers are the Spotfin Chub, an imperiled species found no where else in the world that migrates each fall, and the Lake Sturgeon, an ancient species that migrates as far as 62 miles and can live to be 150 years old!

“Our common histories bind humans and fish together. These bonds form a basis from which we can imagine and build the shared landscapes that further entwine our lives.”

We are excited to add Michael Ezban’s ‘Aquaculture Landscapes’ to our growing library of inspiration to bring design thinking to bear on the aquatic ecology of the Tennessee River system!

Some of the amazing freshwater creatures found in the Tennessee River system and other American rivers were featured in the current issue of National Geographic Magazine.

Congratulations to Freshwaters Illustrated on this feature, and thanks to them and Conservation Fisheries, Tennessee Valley Authority, Tennessee Aquarium, Tennessee River Basin Network and the countless agencies, institutions and non profit organizations that advocate on behalf of freshwater biodiversity and are doing the critical work to ensure their populations and habitat remain in good health!
