Welcome to Kristina's Corner at Catskill Literacies! Kristina's Corner is a safe space for tweens, teens, and adults who may struggle with reading to come and revalue themselves as readers. There are simplified versions of classics, books written in "dylsexic font," and books that present challenging concepts with adjusted vocabulary. The Kristina Corner books, in the literacy studio, were purchased with a kind donation from my friend and neighbor, Betty Wehner, in memory of her grandniece, Kristina Adams. Kristina was a beautiful young woman whose life was cut short due to domestic violence. Her interest in dyslexia lives on in our space here at Catskill Literacies, where everyone is welcome to come and learn.

What makes Catskill Literacies a different kind of educational support experience? Here are a few reasons. The instruction is provided by a fully certified teacher with expertise in literacy teaching and learning. All sessions are planned and documented. Each session includes direct and systematic instruction in the learner's areas of challenge, along with an engaging, holistic approach that builds on the learner's current strengths and interests. The photo shows an example of a plan for a typical lesson with an elementary-level learner. A self-monitoring checklist - negotiated with the learner - helps maintain motivation and focus.

The Catskill Literacies July S.T.E.A.M. Workshop was a tremendous success! Young Lego Masters had the opportunity to plan, build, revise, and work both independently and collaboratively within a creative, social, and supportive learning environment. Each youngster had their very own Lego Journal to write about their buildings and minifigures. They created a Lego Glossary, learned the difference between urban and rural settings, and 2-dimensionality and 3-dimensionality. They understood the celebratory value of revising their ideas and learned from each other. A pretty good week for all!

Special thanks to Rachel Littman of Litt, a wonderful establishment here in Callicoon, for her generous donation of Legos!
