The opening ceremony in Coppen's Shotokan class is a formal ritual used to establish discipline, show respect, and mentally transition students from their daily lives into a focused mindset for physical training.
1. Surretsu (Line Up) Students line up facing the front of the dojo. Practitioners arrange themselves in order of rank, with the most senior grades to the right.
2.The senior student or Sensei commands Shomen ni Rei. Everyone bows toward the front of the dojo as a sign of respect to the founders and historical masters of Shotokan karate.
3. Seiza (Kneel Down) On the command Seiza, students kneel down. When kneeling, you fold your legs underneath you, sitting on your feet while keeping your back straight and hands on your thighs.
4. Mokuso (Meditation) The senior student or Sensei calls Mokuso, signaling everyone to close their eyes and meditate. This brief period is used to empty the mind of daily distractions and mentally prepare for intense training. (Our dojo also offers a prayer.)
To end meditation, the command Mokuso Yame is called, at which point students open their eyes and resume a focused posture.
5. The command Kiritsu (or a similar gesture by the Sensei) is given, and the class stands up into Hachiji dachi (often called the ready stance) is a fundamental, relaxed, yet alert position.

We asked Justin before his 2nd kyu test what he thought would be the hardest part.
Then we asked after it was over.
