Our TMk 8 two-seat Harrier finally saw some sunlight yesterday, after over two years on jacks in the hangar. It's been weighed and the CG calculated within limits. The systems were all serviced and the engine started. It was taxied for the first time since 2006!

We super-filled the oil system, since oil drained all over the engine, mostly the lower sections. There was not enough oil to register on the dip stick! So we knew as soon as the oil started circulating, the excess (and there was plenty) would vent overboard. There is no chance of any corrosion for any of the vehicles parked behind us, as they are all covered in oil! But we expected all that.

The next steps are more taxi checks, finish the avionics install, and button up all the loose panels and wires. We are working on the Maintenance and Inspection program. Getting closer and closer to flight!

On a business trip to Tucson, I had a stop over in DFW, to time the eclipse PERFECTLY. Not planned for the eclipse, so I was scrambling at the last minute to find the special glasses. No luck with them, but I did find special binoculars, with adequate protection. I have never seen a total eclipse. I was shocked, amazed, in awe and a bunch of other emotions I can't explain. Total darkness, like 10:00 pm on a moonless and cloudy night. The only thing visible in the sky was the sun's corona - and viewable without eye protection. Absolutely stunning!

Today is the Winter Solstice - the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. Mythology is that strange gravitational events can occur on this day, due to the relationship between the sun and earth.

I wonder if the Harrier can hover at a much lower hover weight?

After a long rest on jacks, we've started work in earnest again on our TMk-8 two-seat Harrier. The avionics install is 98% complete and we're nearly ready to install the Stencil SIIIS ejection seats. So, we did a refresh inspection on the seats and interfaces, cleaned the cockpits and applied hydraulic power to the jet, while on the jacks. All did not go exactly as planned. Although the gear and flight controls worked perfectly, the flaps did not. The would retract manually, but not extend. The trouble appears to be a selector valve as all the electrical connections are fine. We may have a spare in stock and we may be able to rebuild the valve. After all, it's been setting quite a while with hyd fluid in it. Maybe it's just stuck. We'll get to the bottom of it and back working, before we install the seats and do a weight and balance. Then, we should be ready for ground runs and taxi checks! Maybe some photos later today....
