Our mission is to educate and engage students & visitors about the Ohio River ecosystem and empower them to make a positive impact on the environment.

The Thomas More University Biology Field Station is a one-of-a-kind center for aquatic biology research whose reach is as wide and powerful as the Ohio River. Located just thirty minutes from the main Thomas More campus, the Station, one of the original lock and dam facilities, is perched on the shore of the Ohio River. Through hands-on inquiry-based teaching methods, the faculty and students at t

he Station educate and engage visitors about the Ohio River ecosystem and surrounding watershed, teach the value of the watershed to those who live within it, and empower students to make a positive impact on the River and surrounding environment.

AQUA-OLYMPICS! Today, we held our annual aqua-olympics with the interns—a challenging decathlon of mental & physical events and a fun way to close out the summer before their formal research presentations tomorrow.

Though an otherwise friendly group of students, their competitive sides showed up in what turned out to be the closest games in a decade. After 10 events, the teams were tied and went to a free throw shooting contest to determine the winner where the Fish and Budde House residents edged out the Batgirls and Robin.

It's been a pleasure working with all of them throughout the summer, watching each grow, gain skills, and develop into the next generation of scientists & STEM educators. We will miss them and wish them all the very best.

THANK YOU! We are grateful to everyone who attended Saturday's Concert for Conservation at the Thomas More University Biology Field Station. Thanks to old and new "Friends of the Field Station," we raised over $18,000 for our conservation and education programs with our biggest crowd yet.

Among the many activities at the event, we were excited to officially share our new mural by Michael Thompson (TMU '21) with the community and hear what it meant to him to work on this project.

Special thanks to our volunteers, exhibitors, and sponsors—including gold level sponsors Louisville Zoo and Schack’s Yaks—for helping make the event such a successful one. See you next year!

ONE WEEK AWAY—CONCERT for CONSERVATION!

We can’t believe we’re just one week out from the Biology Field Station’s annual “Raisin’ Hellbenders on the River: Concert for Conservation” on Saturday, July 25 from 3-9 pm!

TURTLE RACES! Turtle races, boat rides, fish art, and scavenger hunts were among the highlights for this week’s K-8 ECO STEM Camp. Hands-on, minds-on lessons on the biodiversity of the River, too. And of course, swimming!

Thanks to all the college interns who served as mentors and became new BFFs with the campers. Also, a sincere note of gratitude to the Renaker Family Foundation for support of the camp and all the K-12 STEM Outreach Programs at the Bio Station.

2026 SUMMER INTERNS! Like the return of the monarch butterflies, our student research interns have returned to the Station for a summer on the River where they will be conducting research projects in the field & in the lab and helping to lead our K-12 STEM Outreach programs.

We would like to thank our partners at SD1 and the WAVE Foundation at the Newport Aquarium along with the Duke Energy Foundation, the Terracon Foundation, National Science Foundation, National Wildlife Federation and the "Friends of the Field Station" for helping to make these internships possible.

SUMMER SEMINAR SERIES! Our annual seminar series will take place in the Biology Field Station Lodge this summer on Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:00 PM (8330 Mary Ingles Highway, California, KY 41007).

Speakers from diverse backgrounds, including several alum of the Bio Station, will discuss their career paths, current research, and professional development. This seminar series is open to the public; feel free to join us.
