University System of Maryland at Southern Maryland USMSM provides access to higher education at an affordable cost offering students to stay close. Mary’s County Regional Airport.

University System of Maryland at Southern Maryland (USMSM) focuses on providing highly developed and comprehensive academic and professional development educational opportunities at the graduate and upper-undergraduate level to a workforce of knowledge workers engaged in technology, teaching, management, health, and other professional services. The 90 plus academic programs and other professional

development opportunities offered by distinguished universities in the Mid-Atlantic Region includes Florida Tech, Notre Dame of Maryland University, University of Maryland at College Park, University of Maryland University College, Salisbury University, Towson University, Bowie State University and Webster University. USMSM provides an opportunity for citizens in the region to achieve their potential in their chosen professional fields and to advance the economic and social development of the region. USMSM also facilitates the advancement and growth of the Naval Air Station at Patuxent River through partnerships with nationally ranked universities providing high technology and management academic programs facilitating the creation of a new national high technology center of excellence in multiple naval aviation specializations. The 60,000 square foot facility is located on a 24-acre campus and includes 35 high-tech classrooms of which two are computer laboratories, three are engineering laboratories, and one is a flight simulation laboratory. USMSM also has meeting facilities and hosts conferences, training programs, luncheon meetings, and special event programs. USMSM is located six miles north of the Naval Air Station at Patuxent River. The Center is within the Wildewood Technology and Professional Park on Airport Road adjacent to St. As USMSM prepares for future needs, envision of lifelong learning to be essential to future workforce requirements. More educational opportunities will soon be available at USMSM for enhanced undergraduate and graduate studies; the contemplated diversification of the Southern Maryland economy and workforce; and the center of excellence in Unmanned Autonomous Systems (UAS) research to be housed in the new building. The University System of Maryland at Southern Maryland (USMSM) is excited to welcome Dr. Sybol Anderson, Executive Director of Leadership Southern Maryland, as a featured panelist for the inaugural Southern Maryland College & Career Pop-Up Open House, taking place on Friday, September 18, 2026!

Dr. Anderson will participate in:

“Leading the Future: Inspiring the Next Generation of Southern Maryland.”

Leaders in education, public service, and community organizations will come together for an engaging conversation about leadership, student success, community impact, and preparing future generations for success.

Dr. Anderson serves as the Executive Director of Leadership Southern Maryland, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering collaboration among executives and emerging leaders for the greater good of Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s counties.

A distinguished scholar, educator, and community leader, Dr. Anderson earned her Ph.D. in Philosophy from Johns Hopkins University, becoming the 19th African-American woman to earn a doctorate in philosophy in the United States.

Through her work in leadership development, education, equity, and community engagement, Dr. Anderson brings a powerful perspective on what it means to lead with purpose, recognize the potential in others, and help prepare the next generation of leaders.

Intern Spotlight: Micheal York 🔬⚙️

USMSM is proud to recognize Micheal York for his dedication to engineering, research, and hands-on STEM learning. As a MATRIX Lab intern, Micheal has gained valuable experience through his work on the Biofouling and pH Sensor Projects, exploring sensor technology, engineering integration, and emerging technologies.

Through his internship, Micheal has had the opportunity to apply his classroom knowledge to real-world engineering projects while developing technical skills in areas ranging from sensor fabrication to embedded systems integration. His experience has also strengthened his understanding of how different engineering disciplines come together to develop and integrate new technologies.

“Interning at the MATRIX Lab at USMSM has been a significant part of my growth and development as an engineer. Through my work on the Biofouling and pH Sensor Projects, I’ve had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with different aspects of engineering and see how different disciplines come together to develop and integrate new technologies.
